“Yes we can can cancer” is the motto of the Adelphi University student athletes, who demonstrate their support for the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop-University Hospital by collecting recyclable bottles and cans on campus and donating the proceeds to the center. Recently, a group of students visited the center’s state-of-the-science facility located at 120 Mineola Boulevard to present a check for more than $7,100 in support of the CCFK’s mission.
In addition to their dedication to academic excellence, with over two-thirds maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better, Adelphi’s University Panthers proudly carry on a time-honored tradition of service. During the past several years, these young men and women have increased community and campus involvement in a number of special programs and Winthrop’s CCFK has been a grateful recipient of their efforts. Not only have the students helped fund the center’s programs, they have also increased campus awareness of pediatric cancer.
Due to the lack of coverage by some medical insurance plans for medical treatments or psychosocial therapies needed by children with cancer and blood disorders, Adelphi students have galvanized support from the community, believing that the more money they raised, the more families they could help. They were right.
“The Adelphi University student-athletes’ efforts have made a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, chief of the division of pediatric hematology/oncology at Winthrop and director of the CCFK.
