High Tea
The 7th Annual High Tea will be held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 1000 Washington Ave., at 3 p.m. Gather friends together, come and enjoy delicious scones, tiny tea sandwiches and sweet treats. Long Island Roller Rebels
Long Island’s only flat-track Roller Derby league, the Long Island Roller Rebels, will host an action-packed doubleheader with the Pioneer Valley Roller Derby Teams from Northampton, MA, at Skate Safe America, 182 Bethpage Sweet Hollow Rod., Old Bethpage (249-1717). A fundraiser for the Little Shelter of Huntington, one of Long Island’s oldest “no-kill” shelters. Guests appearing will include some of long islands favorite comics, and star the incomparable Johnny Rizzo. Owned by Harris Media Group, Jokerz Wild Comedy Club will aim to provide Long Island comedy fans with a fun and affordable night of stand up comedy. Celebrate Ernestine Rose’s 200th Birthday
Ernestine Rose, suffragist, abolitionist, activist for rights for married women is 200 years old this year. Ms. Rose (1810-1892), a rabbi’s daughter from Poland became one of America’s earliest women’s rights activists in 1836, advocating for women’s property rights, women’s suffrage, abolition of slavery and religious free thought. Many of the freedoms we enjoy today result from her vision, courage and commitment. The Friends of the Library are hosting two accomplished artists to talk about this remarkable woman. Janie Stockhamer, Plainview actress/playwright, will recreate Ernestine in a scene from her play, Portraits of the Past: Jewish Women of Valor. Paula Doress-Worters, Ph.D. is the founder and director of The Ernestine Rose Society and author of Mistress of Herself: Speeches and Letters of Ernestine L. Rose. All are invited to a reception following the performance to meet and mingle with the artists. Come and light a birthday candle in honor of Ernestine Rose’ 200th birthday.

Get a free skin-cancer screening at Plainview Hospital from 9 a.m. to noon. The screening is a full-body exam for anyone who has never been diagnosed with skin cancer. •April 17, 18: Civil War encampment. Company “E” of the 14th Brooklyn Regiment, NYS Militia, conducts its annual “School of the Soldier” program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The “soldiers” of the 14th Brooklyn, dressed in the uniforms of the time, will demonstrate the formations the regiment engaged in during training in 1861, including marching, facings and manual of arms. The officers will also lead the men in company drills each day and conclude with a skirmish drill on Sunday.
•April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23: History Alive. Children and parents will be able to try their hand at the everyday chores of 19th-century life, including churning fresh cream into butter at the Powell Farmhouse, carding wool at the Benjamin House, assisting in making a hat, and sweeping the porch at the General Store with a handmade corn broom. Other aspects of children’s lives will also be covered, including play, involving rolling wooden hoops beside the Noon Inn; and education, with participants having the opportunity to see the School House, where they can write on a slate board. Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Helping Hand for Caregivers
Caring for Caregivers is a nonprofit committee founded out of concern for those members of the community who are providing 24-hour care and supervision for a loved one in their home. The goal is to provide up to eight hours of professional respite care each month. The application process is need-based, easy to complete and respectful of the caregiver’s privacy. Once the application has been approved, the caregiver will contract with the agency of his/her choice for provision of service, for four hours during any two-week period, up to a maximum of eight hours per month. Applications are currently being accepted from the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Bethpage, Syosset, Woodbury and Hicksville areas. The committee’s hope is that these few hours will provide a little breathing space so that the caregiver can attend to his/her own needs. Call Sara 698-9750 for an application.
