A new Farmers Market is coming to Hicksville beginning on Sunday, June 27, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The weekly market will feature a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, juices and preserves, fresh flowers, eggs, honey, cheese and much more.
“I am proud to have worked together with Town Supervisor John Venditto, the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and the Hicksville Community Council, as well as local civic groups and resident volunteers, to bring this project to the Town of Oyster Bay,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “We are also grateful to the Farmers Market Association, which will coordinate and oversee the operation of the market, including the selection of vendors. This project has been a great joint effort, bringing together several organizations.”
The Councilwoman noted that vendors participating include those specializing in mixed fruits and vegetables, Long Island potatoes, New York State wine, specialty olive oils, pickles, potted plants and flowers, various dairy items, baked goods, fish and poultry.
“In addition to the many benefits of purchasing locally grown produce and other market items, we hope this location will become a destination for families to spend their Sunday mornings and afternoons,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “With local commerce and dining establishments nearby, residents can plan their day around visiting the market.”
The Councilwoman further explained that farmers’ markets have been proven to help promote business development and expansion in the areas in which they are located. Communities have been shown to regain a figurative town square, experiencing many positive outcomes of foot traffic, aiding revitalization and promoting a greater sense of community.
The Hicksville Farmers Market will be located adjacent to Kennedy Memorial Park, just north of the railroad between Jerusalem Avenue and Broadway. It will be open every Sunday, rain or shine, through November 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A grand opening celebration will be held on opening day Sunday, June 27, beginning at 10 a.m.
“There is nothing quite like wandering around a genuine farmers’ market and being surrounded by the sights, sounds and colors,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “It is the hope of the town, the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and the Hicksville Community Council that the market will expand in size and scope as it becomes more established and that it truly becomes the location where community revitalization, economic development and a showcase for locally grown farm produce, baked goods and more, intersect in the heart of Hicksville.”
