Historical Society Happenings

The Oyster Bay Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at the Matinecock Masonic Lodge, West Main St., at 7 p.m. The meeting will feature a presentation by Town of Oyster Bay Historian and long-time Society Trustee John E. Hammond. Mr. Hammond’s topic will be “Researching and Writing Local History.” Come hear fascinating tales of Mr. Hammond’s detective work in uncovering the truth behind the myths and legends surrounding Oyster Bay’s more than 350 years of history. All are invited to join the Historical Society for this special evening. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

Two-Day Makeover

Downtown Oyster Bay will host a 48-hour make-over event with DoTank: Brooklyn. The Audrey Avenue extension is the location for food, dance, farmer’s market a planning workshop, and a movie on Saturday night and more.  Visit www.oysterbaymainstreet.org for a listing of events.

Amazing Honey Bees

Led by an expert bee-keeper. Designed for the entire family, the event includes a lecture about bees and their behavior, followed by a display of bees outdoors. In addition, there will be a half-mile hike over flat terrain. 10 a.m. to noon at the Muttontown Preserve. Enrollment for the hike ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich.

LI Rose Society Show

The LI Rose Society will present its annual Rose Show, “A Rose For All Seasons” at the Horticultural Center building at Planting Fields Arboretum, 1385 Planting Fields Rd. Hundreds of locally grown roses will be entered into the competition by amateur growers. Each rose is judged by a team of certified judges for conformance to standards set forth by the society. There will be a section of beautiful flower arrangements with roses as the dominant flower portraying the “A Rose for all Seasons” show theme. Visitors can purchase potted roses, plants, and other garden related items. The show is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. There is a parking charge of $6 per car. Call 922-9200. This event is fun for the entire family.

Broad Stripes and Bright Stars

The Northwinds Symphonic Band, under the direction of Helen P. Bauer, will present an afternoon of American band classics in celebration of Flag Day. The program will include marches, Broadway and movie music, patriotic favorites and solo features by members of the band. Come for an exciting concert on the lawn at one of Long Island’s most beautiful landmarks, the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. It promises to be 60 minutes of great music and entertainment for the entire family. June 13 at 3 p.m. Admission is free. Long Island Bonsai Society

Meets at 7:30 p.m. in the main greenhouse classroom at the Planting Fields in Oyster Bay. The speaker will be Kathy Shaner. Members are available to answer any questions about basic bonsai techniques and help with any problems you may be having with your bonsai trees. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome. Strokes are the number one cause of adult disability and the third leading cause of death in the US. North Shore Audubon Summer Bird Watching Walk

Pack Your Pack Program on Diabetes

The 15-minute program with a CVS pharmacist will teach seniors how to manage their medications safely and promote a healthy lifestyle while saving money. Following the presentation, there will be a one-on-one confidential consultation with the pharmacist who will review prescription and non-prescription medications, offer advice on best practices and answer any questions. 11 a.m. at Doubleday Babcock Senior Center, 45 E. Blood Drive

The Italian-American Citizens Club is holding a community blood drive at its headquarters, 48 Summit St, from 3 to 9 p.m. A spaghetti and meatball dinner will be served with every donation of blood. The blood drive is co-hosted by Gene King and Ernie Muller.
