Free Healthcare Screenings

As part of the grand opening celebration of its newest store in Farmingdale, Stop & Shop. 55 Motor Ave., is offering free healthcare screenings for local residents. Free cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure screenings will be offered at the pharmacy between 9 a.m. and noon. Also on June 19.

Multi-Cultural Sunday

The Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), will celebrate “Many Nations and Languages, One Faith” at 9:30 a.m. with multi-language musical offerings and a hymnfest, followed by a tasting of ethnic foods prepared by the congregation, many of whom will be dressed in native clothing. JDRF Meeting/Research Update

Learn about the latest developments in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s billion dollar research efforts and how they can affect people who have diabetes. Speaker: Barbara Araneo, Ph.D., Director of the Diabetes Complications Therapeutic Area. All are welcome. 7 p.m. at the Melville Marriott, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Melville. Blessing of the Riders

Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), will welcome the Lighthouse Harley Chapter of the Long Island Motorcycle Club at 10:45 a.m. for the annual Blessing of the Riders. Rev. Julia Y.H.Yim, Pastor, will officiate at the event, which last year drew over 100 riders and spectators. The community is invited to attend. •June 15: Housing and Development Task Force. The Task Force will develop and implement community outreach programs to housing conference, study proposed development projects and the subcommittees will report. 9 to 10 a.m.

June 16: Healthcare Task Force. The LI Wellness Challenge is well underway. Action Long Island will begin development of its Women’s Health Conference, review its position on Federal Healthcare Reform and the subcommittees will report. 9 to 10 a.m.

June 17: Small Business/Economic Development Task Force. Continue development and implementation of localized Small Business Round Table workshops and informational programs to educate and motivate local small businesses. ALI will also continue planning for its joint program with Suffolk County and further develop the Economic Initiative to boost the economy and create manufacturing jobs on LI. 9 to 10:30 a.m.

•June 22: The Healthcare Task Force Presents: The First Annual Long Island Wellness Challenge Kick Off Event from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury. In partnership with the American Heart Association, ALI will honor companies that have taken a step toward wellness. Learn about health and wellness from guest speakers, Bob Nystrom and Susan Somerville. There will also be time for networking and to get to know the companies and organizations involved in the challenge.

•June 23: Transportation Task Force. There will be a report on the progress of re-opening of the LIRR station at Republic Airport, construction progress on Route 110 between the LIE and the NSP and the planned construction on Route 347; MTA takeover of Nassau and Suffolk County bus systems. 9 to 10 a.m.

•June 24: Environmental Energy. ALI will continue development and implementation of its Energy Industry Economic Initiative and work to eliminate the use of fossil fuels on Long Island and continue to grow its commercial recycling program for local businesses. The subcommittees will report. 8:30 to 10 a.m.

VBS at Living Faith Christian Church

Living Faith Christian Church is having its first Vacation Bible School in its new building at 25 Hempstead Tpke., Farmingdale from June 28 through July 2. Galactic Blast Vacation Bible School

Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, invites all children to Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure Praising God Vacation Bible School. Board the spaceship Galactic Praise to see the awesome universe (and God) in a whole new way. The fun begins July 26 and ends July 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each Galactic Mission begins with a Bible Story in the Good New Galaxy, along with science activities at the Orbital Observatory, music at Moon & Tune, art projects at Cosmic Crafts, games at Rocket Rev and a snack at the Astro Bistro. •Do You Speak Yinglish? The Yiddish Club allows individuals of varying language abilities to speak “Yinglish,” a combination of Yiddish and English. Ongoing Programs

Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free Educational Services

Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. The LI Educational Opportunity Center offers programs leading to employment in a variety of fields as well as entrance to college. The LIEOC has satellite units in many areas. Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.
