Kelly Smolenski – Valedictorian – 2010

Kelly is a talented young woman who excels across several disciplines. She is a bright, motivated student who combines academic goals with serious commitment. Teachers find that Kelly loves to be challenged. She sets high goals for herself and strives to meet them. Kelly has been focused on preparing for her future career in architecture. Her love of art, outstanding grades, coupled with her formidable test scores, substantiate that ambition.

Whether it is playing in a soccer game, competing in a track meet, creating an art project, or performing community service, Kelly gives 100 percent to all that she does. She is able to balance and prioritize a busy academic schedule with numerous outside interests. She has selflessly given to the New Hyde Park community through her participation and leadership roles in sports and clubs. She leads her peers by example always, demonstrating kindness and consideration toward others. In December, Kelly was recognized as the “News 12 Scholar Athlete of the Month.” Kelly is a tremendous asset to the varsity soccer program and track team. She spends countless hours playing soccer both for the school and on an outside travel team. She is a gifted athlete. She is a young woman who has so much to offer and will be a tremendous asset to her college community.

Aneesa Thannickal

Aneesa is a student of exceptional intelligence and ability whose positive demeanor and sensitivity toward others are evident in all areas she undertakes. Aneesa’s academic accomplishments are outstanding, and her participation and recognition in the following organizations are commendable: Model United Nations, Talented and Gifted, Science Olympiads, Mathletes, National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. Aneesa has taken advantage of the challenging course work in both academic and elective areas that New Hyde Park has to offer, as well as diversifying her extracurricular involvement. These experiences have strengthened her desire to assist others, learn and explore new opportunities.

One of Aneesa’s greatest contributions has been to The Chariot, the school newspaper, where she moved from reporter to editor in just one year. Her love of writing has been highlighted as each edition of the school newspaper is printed. Aneesa has used her talents to reach outside of the school and into the community by volunteering at her local church and at Long Island Jewish Hospital. Aneesa also works a part time job in her free time to help finance upcoming events. She is truly an outstanding student and a well rounded individual who will surely enrich the college she chooses to attend next year!

Yesha Manisar

Yesha Manisar – Valedictorian – 2010

Yesha Maniar is a multi-faceted young woman with many varied interests and talents. Yesha took the most rigorous academic program available at Herricks High School and excelled in every course, earning her the honor of being named Valedictorian for the class of 2010. This year Yesha was named a Semi-finalist in the prestigious 2009 Siemens Math, Science and Technology Competition for her science research. Despite her talent and dedication to the sciences, Yesha’s true passion is social studies. She loves public speaking and debating and is at her best when participating in competitions about constitutional issues. Yesha was accepted to Georgetown University and although she has not made a commitment to attend the university, she is planning on studying government and law in college. Yesha values the importance of physical activity and has been a valuable member of the Varsity tennis team throughout high school and played at the Nassau County Tennis Invitational this year. Yesha is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, Senator of the Student Government, member of the Site Based Planning Committee, member of the Mock Trial Team and Science Olympiads, and somehow still had time to volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Shelter Rock Public Library.

Amrita Chawla

Amrita Chawla – Salutatorian – 2010

It is with great pleasure that Herricks High School announces Amrita Chawla as the Salutatorian for the class of 2010. Over the past four years, Amrita has quietly risen to the top of her class while taking the most challenging classes that Herricks has to offer. Known for her work ethic and positive attitude, Amrita was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Amrita is awaiting acceptances at some of the most prestigious medical programs in the country, and her ultimate goal is to use her talents to help others through the health professions. Outside of school, Amrita’s true passion is traditional Indian dance, and her friends and family were proud to watch her successfully perform Arangetram, which represents the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to her craft. Despite her hectic schedule, Amrita finds time for participation in the Science Olympiad, to serve as editor of the Math Magazine, to perform with the Dance Theatre Club, and to contribute to Homecoming every year. She also serves as a dedicated community volunteer. Herricks High School is proud of all of Amrita Chawla’s accomplishments and we wish her success in all of her future endeavors.
