Canterbury’s Oyster Bar Hosts OBRM Art ‘n’ Photo Collection

The Restaurant where the World is your Oyster Features Railroadiana at Canterbury’s Oyster Bar & Grill

Currently, Canterbury’s Oyster Bar & Grill owner Mark Fox has turned over the restaurant’s turn of the century picture gallery wall to display items from the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum’s Art and Photo Collection. The collection joins photos and cartoons of Theodore Roosevelt that appear in the Library Room at Canterbury’s. All in all, they provide a superb backdrop of classic New England Oyster House charm.

John Specce, OBRM president said, “Mark Fox rotates art work every month at Canterbury’s along the wall on the left side as you come in from the Audrey Avenue entrance. That is the wall that is most advantageous for viewing and provides the most wall space.”

He added, “In August a new display will go up and ours will come down.”

Mr. Specce said, “All of the prints and photos that you see are from the collection of our deceased member, Pete Taormina. Pete’s passion was railroads and he collected a lot of interesting stuff and what you see on the wall is just a small sample of what he has. The only item that is an actual work of art is the watercolor of the locomotive 35 at the station which is under the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum banner. The remaining are attractive and some are colorful, but they are copies, not originals.

“Regardless, we are proud to display what we feel gives a very good depiction of railroading throughout the present and past century and are indebted to Pete and his memory lives on in that display.

“We will in the future advertise another opportunity for the public to visit the station and they will have a chance to purchase the many items available, both framed photos, prints, railroad memorabilia, etc.,” concluded Mr. Specce.

Located at 46 Audrey Avenue in historic Oyster Bay, Canterbury’s is a well established, family friendly neighborhood restaurant. Mark Fox has long been a loyal supporter of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. Most recently the restaurant was a Corporate Sponsor of the OBRM Summer Solstice Celebration.

“We hope you will drop by for a great dining experience, and ‘feast your eyes’ on the unique collection of period art and photographs!” said Mr. Fox.
