Belle Santora Knows Oyster Bay

Belle Santora called to identify the mystery picture in the July 15 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. She said, “It’s the walkway that goes down towards the east end of Beekman Beach – the walkway to nowhere.”

Belle said she had a wonderful time celebrating her 99th birthday. “It was over a weeklong celebration,” she said. Adding with her wonderful sense of humor, “I got so many flowers I thought it was my wake!”

Belle Santora was born on June 20, 1911. She said, “My birthday celebration started three days before and didn’t end until a week later.”

Billy Minicozzi said, “It’s two men fishing in Oyster Bay Harbor.” On a sports note he wished good luck to the Mets to make it to first place. He also wanted to honor Bob Sheppard, longtime New York Yankees and New York Giants announcer who died Sunday, July 11 at the age of 99. His funeral was held July 17 at St. Christopher’s Church in Baldwin. Nicknamed “The Voice of God” for the quality of his voice and enunciation, he also taught speech at St. John’s University.

The Yankees lost another icon this week with the death on Tuesday, July 15 of owner George Michael Steinbrenner III, at age 80 in Tampa, Florida. He was known for taking the Yankees to a higher level and for his firing and re-hiring of managers as he saw fit for the benefit of the team.

Mr. Steinbrenner will also be remembered fondly, as a regular character on the comedy series Seinfeld where he was George Costanza’s (played by Jason Alexander) boss.

John DeJesu called to identify the mystery picture as being taken “In front of the WaterFront Center.” That was a good call. The photographer was sitting in a car at Beekman Beach when the picture was snapped of the two fishermen wading in the outlet from the Mill Pond.
