Obituary: Dr. Nancy Powers

Dr. Nancy Powers, of Locust Valley, died on July 11, 2010 at North Shore LIJ Hospital in Manhasset, of cancer. She was 61.

 

Nancy Spinning Powers was born Feb. 20, 1949 in Glen Cove, daughter of Barbara Spinning Powers and the late Augustin Jay Powers Jr. She graduated from the Green Vale and Foxcroft Schools and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in 1971. Dr. Powers was awarded her doctorate in psychology from the University of Denver, followed by a fellowship at the Harvard Medical School in neuropsychology and behavioral medicine. She received a master of science degree in pediatrics from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center as part of her physician assistant training.

Dr. Powers practiced in Colorado for most of her professional life. She had been an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado Medical School. She was in full-time private practice for 27 years in pediatric and adult neuropsychology, with a specialty in brain injury and brain tumor evaluation and rehabilitation. She was on the Swedish Medical Center Neurotrauma Team and served as director of the Colorado Neurological Institute Brain and Spinal Tumors Program. She recently relocated to Rapid City, SD, where she opened a private practice at the Black Hills Pediatric Group.

Nancy Powers was a passionate outdoorswoman with great enthusiasm for skiing, riding and cycling. She pursued each with characteristic boundless energy and determination. Often, as a member of Team Evergreen, she rode in events covering many hundreds of miles throughout the Rockies in support of various charities. Nancy had a great sense of adventure and travel took her to worldwide locations throughout her life. She participated in a number of medical mission trips, including visits to Carpathian villages and Bucharest to provide medical aid to Romanian orphans.

Dr. Powers is survived by her mother Barbara Spinning Powers and her four siblings, Michael S. Powers of Glen Cove, Wendy Powers of New York, NY, Laura Powers-Swiggett of Huntington and Devon P. Delaney of Princeton, NJ. Her father Augustin Jay Powers Jr. passed away in 2005.

Funeral service was held at St. John’s of Lattingtown, Locust Valley, on July 23. Arrangements made by Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment private.
