LICM Events

Pajamarama Begins

Pajamarama! activities will run from noon to 4 p.m. and are free with museum admission.  During the afternoon, visitors will learn about traditional Taiwanese sleep charms, create a fluffy counting sheep puppet, make a mini campfire sculpture to use for family storytelling or add a favorite bedtime excuse to the LICM bedtime quilt.

Kids are sure to delight in the chance to meet some favorite storybook characters at Pajamarama!  At 1 p.m. meet Curious George, listen to a story and create a curiosity cap to wear! Join Mouse from the famous storybook “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie” for story time in the Orange Studio at 2:30 p.m. and then make a bedtime cookie treat. All visitors are encouraged to wear their favorite PJs … even the grownups!

LICM Director of Programs Aimee Terzulli comments about the event “Each year we like to end the summer with a big celebration, this year since our traveling exhibit is about sleep and dreams we thought a big pajama party would be the perfect fit!”

She went on to say “It’s also a time to remind children about the importance of reading. We will be having two separate book readings featuring famous story book characters. Having the pajama drive also introduces children to the concept of giving back to the community”

Families will also get the chance to enjoy the last few days of Night Journeys: An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams stay at LICM before it leaves on September 12.  In the exhibit visitors enter into a whimsical bedroom setting where they are introduced to sleeping places from many parts of the world. Children can lie down on an ancient Egyptian bed, try out a headrest from Japan or Somalia or carry dolls using a Mexican rebozo.  You can also peek into unusual sleeping places, shine giant flashlights under the bed to scare away the monsters or explore bedtime rituals from around the world.

The Pajamarama event will help other children have the familiar bedtime rituals we often take for granted. Visitors are asked to bring a new pair of pajamas to the Museum that day.  The donations will go to Pajama Program, a national nonprofit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in transitional housing. The pajama donations  will be distributed through  the Nassau County Department of Health and Human Services.  Visitors donating pajamas will receive one free child’s admission pass for use on a future visit.

All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1 year old FREE. $9 seniors.  Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply.  For additional information, contact 224-5800.

An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams

Through September 12

Be among the first visitors to take a fascinating journey through the world of bedtime rituals and routines and into the nighttime experience of sleep and dreams. Visitors enter into a whimsical bedroom setting where they are introduced to sleeping places from many parts of the world. Lie down on an ancient Egyptian bed, try out a headrest from Japan or Somalia or carry dolls using a Mexican rebozo. Peek into unusual sleeping places, shine giant flashlights under the bed to scare away the monsters and explore bedtime rituals from around the world.

Visitors continue their journey into the world of sleep and dreams by exploring the “active” state of sleep in an animated video that shows eye movement, body movement and brain activity during sleep. Next, compare some of your dreams to those of both children and adults and see what they mean. Explore different approaches to dream interpretation by people around the world. Learn about dream books from China, feed a bad dream to Baku—the Japanese dream eater and see how a family in Malaysia shares their dreams over breakfast. All Ages. Free with museum admission.
