Letter: Historically, Immigrants Assimilated

(This letter to the editor is in response to the Long Island Wins column, titled “Welcoming Strangers: Immigration and Faith” by Maryann Sinclair Slutsky, which appeared in the Friday, Sept. 17 edition of the Farmingdale Observer.)

Ms. Slutsky’s editorial in the Sept. 17, 2010 edition of your paper is a nice story and almost all people would agree with her position. But something is missing from her story.  It may have been an inadvertent typo or omission. She forgets to mention “legal immigrants.”

Illegal acts cannot be rewarded. Ms Slutsky, as she noted, most of our grand parents and other family member immigrated here to the United States of America legally! They also had to assimilate into American culture.

Please stop this silliness. All that’s missing, and when you have no other legitimate argument, is calling it “racist.” As a further aside, if I were to illegally enter Mexico to live there, I would be deported. But please, let’s us not confuse the issue with facts.
