The WaterFront Center Hosts its JSA’s Optimist Alternate Regatta

The WaterFront Center (WFC) of Oyster Bay a not for profit marine and sailing community center held its Junior Sailing Association’s Opti Alternate Regatta, on Wednesday, Aug. 11, under bright and hot conditions. The Race Committee was able to get off three-fair races in the regatta. Making it even more fun, some parents took in the scene from the WFC spectator boat, the Christeen.

Thirty-eight boats and sailors, followed by parents and coaches descended early in the morning of Aug. 11, to the gem hidden away in Oyster Bay. It will soon rival others locations across the sound as the best place to have a regatta whether as a sailor or as a spectator from land.

At the regatta, you could bring your cooler and enjoy a refreshing drink and a bite while watching your favorite mini sailors race from the end of the pier; or from the oyster sloop Christeen.

This year, Opti Alternates included a green fleet and it was a huge success; in addition to the regular blue and white fleet attendees. Winner by a tie-breaker – over Frankie Lizza of WFC’s green fleet – was Caroline Martocci who showed steady improvement finishing 4, 2 and a bullet (a racing term meaning first place) in the last race respectively.

The White fleet was well represented with Max Hafen from Corintihan Yacht Club (CYC) finishing strong in all three races with 1, 1, 2, respectively. And finally, in tight racing, Henry Harris from Indian Harbor won the blue fleet with a 2, 3, 1, respectively.

“Thank you to all parents, instructors and sailors for making it an awesome day on and off the water!,” said David Waldo, WaterFront Center executive director. Call 922-SAIL for more information.
