FP Runners, Walkers Invited to Great Prostate Cancer LI Challenge 5K Race

Runners and walkers of all ages and levels of ability from Floral Park and surrounding communities are cordially invited to join in the fun on Sunday, Nov. 14 for the second annual Great Prostate Challenge Long Island, a 5 Kilometer run, half-mile Fun Walk and Health Fair on the rolling pathways of the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury.

The event is being conducted under the auspices of the Integrated Medical Foundation, under the direction of IMF Executive Director Rhonda Samuel. It is the third in a series of 14 races being conducted all over the country to help further the goals of zero prostate cancer deaths and zero prostate cancer cases.

The premier local sponsor of the Nov. 14 race is the firm of Nussbaum Yates Berg Klein & Wolpow LLP, Certified Public Accountants.  Other local partners include Bostwick Laboratories, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Accuray Cyber Knife and Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology.  Additional support is being provided by the Town of Oyster Bay with a big boost from Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto.

The 5 Kilometer Run will feature an eclectic 3.109 mile course over hill and over dale on the scenic Town golf course, a high quality commemorative long sleeve technical shirt for everyone who enters, awards to 5 year age groups through 85 and over, plus Clydesdales/Athenas. As an added bonus, there will be free prostate cancer screenings on site on the morning of the Run from 8 through 11 a.m.

Entry fees are only $20 for those who pre-register; and $25 day of race. Race administration will be handled by the Greater Long Island Running Club. Timing and scoring are by JMS Racing Services (using the IPICO Dual Frequency Timing System) with a big assist from GLIRC’s own Linda Ottaviano and Fred von der Heydt.

Floral Park athletes played a major role in the inaugural Great Prostate Cancer 5K Challenge in November of 2009, highlighted by the award winning performance of Christine Centola, who took first place among the women in the highly competitive 20-24 age group. Race organizers are hoping to see Christine back again on Nov. 14, and are looking for lots more athletes from the local area to join her.
