Belle Santora Knows Oyster Bay
Belle Santora called to identify the mystery picture in the Oct. 14 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. “I think it’s Roosevelt Beach looking across to Centre Island. I hope it’s right,” she said.
It is actually a little to the left of Roosevelt Beach but not Beekman Beach so that looks like a great identification to us.
Belle is still enjoying the excitement of her 99th birthday in June. Her niece and nephew surprised her with a luncheon at Rothmann’s. She said, “I was there walking out with a tiara on; and they had a three piece band. They switched the music to sing Happy Birthday at 99 and they all clapped. It was wonderful. Then someone comes up and grabs me and its Frank Scalera!”
Belle said she got her “low 922” phone number in 1953. She remembers swimming at Beekman Beach next to Jakobson’s Shipyard. She said, “We didn’t really go swimming then at Beekman Beach because the water was oily from the shipyard. Now everyone goes down there.”
If you have ever had the pleasure of speaking with Belle Santora you know what a positive attitude she has. She is a wonder at 99 and we look forward to her 100th birthday. That will be a great celebration for Oyster Bay and East Norwich!
