Hicksville’s Courtney Breen Anchors Hofstra’s Women’s Soccer Team

Game-Winning Goal Secures

Home Field Advantage in CAA Tourney

Hofstra midfielder Courtney Breen’s overtime goal against Georgia State on Oct. 22 locked up home field advantage in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament for the #21 ranked Pride women’s soccer team.

Breen, a junior midfielder from Hicksville, has started in all 17 games for the Pride and has contributed three goals and nine assists to complement her solid defensive play. Her goal in overtime came 4:58 seconds into the extra period, as Hofstra out-shot Georgia State, 29-4.

“Dana [Bergstrom] played a great ball to Grace [Hawkins] and Grace made a fantastic turn, sent a delivery and luckily I was in the box and made a standard run and it got in the back of the net,” said Breen.

The Pride, whose senior class recently became the most winning group in team history with 54 wins, have won 15 straight since dropping their season opener.

“We’ve come a long way. It’s been a long season since August, having our ups and downs in practice and just fulfilling what we need to get done,” Breen said, adding, “It’s great that we have a lot of upperclassmen and a lot of us have played together, but we also have our freshmen and newbie goalies.”

The Pride can finish the year perfect in conference play with a home win against Northeastern this Saturday, Oct. 30 at 4:30 p.m. If Breen and the Pride are successful, it will mark the first time a team in the CAA has gone undefeated and untied in conference play since 1996.

“We want to finish the season on Saturday and then work our way into the tournament. We don’t want to look past it – just take it one game at a time,” said Breen.
