James, Virginnia Lorraine was born Aug. 17, 1939 to the late Henry and Rebecca James. Lorraine was born and raised in Oyster Bay and graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1957. After graduation, Lorraine worked for Doubleday Book Co. in Garden City until it closed. She then began working at Shelter Rock Public Library where she became head of Circulation Services and retired in 2004 after 39 years. She was also a member and officer of the New York Library and Nassau County Library Associations.
She was an active member of Hood A.M.E. Zion Church of Oyster Bay until her illness prevented her from attending. She was a member and past president of the Usher Board, a Sunday School teacher, class leader and quarterly conference secretary. She was also the recipient of the Renee Harer Good Neighbor Award presented by the Interreligious and Human Needs Council.
She leaves to mourn her passing, sisters, Frances Hicks, Jennette James, Martha Green, Laura James, Claudette Allen, Patricia James and brother Henry James; brother-in-law James Green; sister-in-law Gale James; godchild Michelle Francis; aunt Virginia James; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by sisters, Irma Lowe, Joan James, Joyce Brooks, Elizabeth James and brothers Frederick and Bruce James.
Lorraine was a very loving, caring and giving person who loved her church, the NY Yankees, traveling, bowling, and family gatherings. Her smile will be missed.
Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. The funerals service was held at Hood AME Zion Church on Nov 12. Interment Pine Hollow Cemetery.
