Thanksgiving

It’s hard to believe that the Thanksgiving holiday is upon us once again. This is the time of year when families come together to give thanks for our blessings and for the positive things in our lives.

Thanksgiving has been a tradition in the United States for several centuries, but the tradition actually extends beyond our country. In fact, the ancient Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, Chinese and Egyptians held harvest festivals and thanksgiving celebrations. Though the traditions may differ, there are common elements.

In the United States we have much to be thankful for and our celebration has gone beyond appreciation for a rewarding harvest. This has become a time when Americans give thanks for our homes, families, friendships and good fortune. At the same time, it is also important that we remember those who are less fortunate. This is the time of year when many of our generous residents give of themselves and donate to food and clothing drives for those who are in need.

One of the things for which I am most grateful is that we have so many charitable people among us. I encourage anyone who is able to donate to a local food drive, help serve at a local soup kitchen or drop off some warm clothing for a family that may not be able to afford coats or sweaters to do so. I also encourage residents to remember all that we have in this country and to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy each day.

This is truly the greatest nation in the world and we owe a debt of gratitude to the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock centuries ago who celebrated the first Thanksgiving. Let us remember those Pilgrims and all our traditions this Thanksgiving and enjoy the opportunity to celebrate with our friends and family.

I wish you and your families the very best this Thanksgiving holiday.
