A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.
The meeting opened with a Pledge to the Flag. Present were: Mayor Kevin J. Greene, Trustees Thomas J. Tweedy, James E. Rhatigan, Mary-Grace Tomecki, Dominick A. Longobardi, Village Administrator Virginia Appel, Village Clerk Yvonne R. Blaber, Superintendent of Building Department and Superintendent of Public Works Stephen L. Siwinski, Police Commissioner Stephen G. McAllister and Village Attorney John E. Ryan.
Library
Trustee Longobardi reported that the Floral Park Public Library received a community arts grant from Target for a mural in the children’s section of the library.
Fire Department and Police Department
Trustee Rhatigan thanked the fire department and the police department for all their good work in protecting the residents of Floral Park.
Department of Public Works
Trustee Tweedy reported that the Department of Public Works is working diligently picking up leaves. Residents are reminded to place leaves in bags for pick-up. Do not rake leaves into the street as this can clog drains and catch basins. Leaves are also an attractive nuisance to small children who play in leaf piles in the street; children and cars are never a good combination. If you have a landscaper, it is his responsibility to take away the leaves. DPW has started a leaf compost at Centennial Gardens. This project recycles this bountiful natural resource which will provide nutrient enriched soil to our park grounds and planting area in the Spring. It also saves money in carting fees.
The road restoration of Landau Avenue is moving at a quicker pace than anticipated. Sidewalk and curb work is proceeding now that National Grid has completed their phase of the work. A gas leak was reported and quickly repaired by National Grid. DPW supervisors are monitoring road patch and repair on Landau Avenue and on the south side and the west end of the village.
The Mayflower garage roof has been remedially repaired but will require a more permanent repair in the near future.
This year’s sidewalk repair program is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.
DPW Sanitation Supervisor Kevin Ginnane recently met with people from Our Lady of Victory School who are anxious to fully participate in the school recycling program. Kevin’s efforts combined with the participation of our schools, has decreased the waste being sent to American RefFuel for incineration. This provides not only a savings to the village but is a responsible reaction to the major waste management issues on Long Island.
Trustee Tweedy wished everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Mayor’s Report
Mayor Greene reminded residents that the annual tree lighting ceremony sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club, will take place at Memorial Park on Friday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
Mayor Greene reported that the Floral Park Fire Department will once again be participating in Operation Wounded Warrior. Please bring donations to Centennial Hall on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monetary donations can be made via their website at www.ncff-oww.com or may be mailed to Nassau County Firefighters, Operation Wounded Warrior, 120 Covert Avenue, Stewart Manor, NY 11530. Trucks will depart Centennial Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010. Nassau County Firefighters will visit wounded soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, DC and U.S. Army Post Ft. Bragg and MCB Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

On motion by Trustee Rhatigan, seconded by Trustee Tweedy, and carried unanimously, Mayor Greene recessed the meeting at 8:50 p.m.
