The newest generation of the Hicksville Hurricanes is rapidly making a name for themselves.
The 10U (11U this spring) Team, who all summer were giving some of the best teams around a run for their money, took first place in the Bethpage Fall Classic in a sweet fashion.
After a slow and tired start, and a lineup tweaking by the coaches, the young Canes roared through the playoff rounds. They took out the Plainview Hawks in the quarterfinal, and thanks to the outstanding outing by the lefty Terence Wong, they crushed the Farmingdale Mudcats in the semifinals.
Now they had to face the well-known L.I. Indians in the championship game.
“Not a problem,” said Manager Steve Delaney.
He gave Joe Sarni the start and as it turned out, the finish. Sarni went the whole game giving up only three hits, no runs, no walks and striking out 10 batters.
Backed by Zach Vollono with the only two RBIs of the game and an on the money throw from right fielder Gianni Sozio to catcher Nick Delaney, the defense cut down the only chance the Indians had to score.
With a tremendous effort from the rest of the Hurricanes, they walked away with the Championship 2-0. A job well done boys – the town, the coaches and especially your parents couldn’t be prouder!
