Herricks is Crazy For You

Herricks Community Players will hold auditions for George and Ira Gershwin’s musical comedy Crazy For You. Performance dates: May 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22. Audition at 7 p.m. Call backs Jan. 24. The Wreckin’ Ball

Presented by Nassau Community College’s Theatre and Dance Department and the Africana Studies Department. The play will be performed through Jan. 23 and Jan. 26 through Jan. 30 at the Little Theatre. The Wreckin’ Ball is a two-act, eight character play that explores the changes one family in particular, and a community in general, endures when their inner city neighborhood is slated for urban renewal. Written by Celeste Bedford Walker, the play dramatizes real life situations occurring all across the country as people attempt to cope with the loss of something they once held to be permanent. Performances take place at 8 p.m. each day except Sunday, when they begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $9 a person; $7 seniors 55 and over; $5 for those aged 18 and under and free for current college students requesting rush tickets. The One Who Laughs, Lasts

Experience at least 100 laughs. Develop your comic perspective. Tickle your funny bone. Saranne Rothberg explores research on the mind-body connection and helps you to develop strategies for a joy-filled day. Saranne Rothberg creates comedy programming in all media formats as CEO of ComedyCures. She is regularly featured by CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS. Oprah features Ms. Rothberg as her “Hero” in Oprah’s book Live Your Best Life. Ms. Rothberg launched ComedyCures from her chemo chair in 1999 to bring, joy, hope, laughter and therapeutic entertainment to her fellow patients, family members and medical caregivers. Defensive Driving Course

Knights of Columbus #11836 at St Anne’s Church in Garden City is offering the community the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course. The course will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the St Anne’s Church Rectory, LL, 35 Dartmouth St. Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible for 10 percent off motor vehicle insurance for three years and/or a reduction of points from driver’s license. Antique Appraisal Event

The Garden City Jewish Center Sisterhood announces its “Antique Appraisal” event beginning at 1 p.m. at the Garden City Jewish Center, 168 Nassau Blvd. Come and meet an appraiser from Gramercy Park Estate Liquidation and Appraisal Services and have him appraise your antique items to learn their value. The fee for the appraisal is $10 per item or 3 items for $25 (maximum of three items per person). Celebration of Black History Month

Gloria Dei Church, 600 New Hyde Park Rd., New Hyde Park, will hold a concert featuring Dene’ Bradford, soprano, the first place winner of the Leontyne Price Voice Competition. Featured will be hits from West Side Story, La Boheme and other audience favorites. Suggested donation is $10 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Long Island Cares. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

New support groups are being offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Groups are held at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. There is no cost for any group, however, preregistration is required. Call Sandi Kafenbaum 877-4314 or the Breast Cancer Hotline at 800-877-8077:

• A group will meet weekly for 8 weeks on Mondays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. tentatively beginning Jan. 24.

• The Close Knit Group, a knit and talk group for women with breast cancer, meets from 2:30 to 4 pm. on the first Monday of each month.

• Other groups for couples, spouses/partners, women with metastatic breast cancer and men with breast cancer are available upon request.

Defensive Driving Courses

Anger Management

Contact Lani McElgun, M.A., LMFT, at 520 Franklin Ave., Suite 213, or call 428-1167 for information on the following: Group: Turn angry behaviors into more productive ones; learn healthier ways to communicate with spouse, children, co-workers. Individual: Combine individual therapy and anger management techniques. Both are held on a weekly basis and facilitated by a licensed marriage and family therapist, also certified in anger management. Court mandates welcome.

Bereavement Groups

•Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

•Group 2: A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.

Epilepsy Foundation

Located at 506 Stewart Ave. (739-7733) the following is offered:

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Call Janet Romeo, ext. 145.

•Support Groups. Do you have seizures? Are you having difficulty with jobs, relationships, etc.? Are you isolating from your family and friends? If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, we have group for you. Call Jennifer Colbert, CSW, ext. 400.

Sons of Italy

Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. The lodge co-ed with many projects that enhance the preservation of the member’s Italian heritage and raises funds for contributions to worthy charities. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:

•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.

•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404.
