The Irish Cultural Society will have a musical event for its meeting at 8 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St. In a PowerPoint presentation enriched by musical presentations, the speaker, Robert Lynch, will remind the audience of the history of Irish influences in American popular music. His presentation will take the audience from the early minstrel shows right up to Spider-Man. As an added feature to the history, Mr. Lynch, who is a member of the Country Tyrone Pipers’ Band, will play selections on the tin whistle, the uilleann pipes and the bagpipes.

The Bras Are Back
Benefit Auction for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. Over 100 people – artists, breast cancer survivors and family members and others – have made Creative Cups – ordinary bras transformed into works of art, that will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The creations, although all made from bras, vary greatly. They are poignant, clever or just beautiful. There’s It’s All about Support by breast cancer survivor Jennifer Montgomery of East Rockaway; the folksy Lessons from Lizzie by quilter Mary Stipe of Northport; and Brah Jongg, made of mah jongg tiles, by Jodi Charak of Roslyn Heights. Rima Fakih, Miss USA, created the gorgeous CLEAVopatra bra; WCBS radio personality Pat Farnack did a witty BRAdio; and Mary Ann Mearini’s (Valley Stream) Yogi Bra’rer is autographed by the famous Yankee catcher. These bras and the others will be auctioned at Adelphi’s University Center. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the reception and auction will be held from 6 to 8 pm. Ticket’s cost $100. Call 800-877-8077.

Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will be hosting a poetry event featuring John Amen at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on Molloy College’s Rockville Centre campus. This event is free and open to the public. An open reading will follow the featured poets. John Amen is the author of three books of poetry, and his work has appeared in numerous publications nationally and internationally. The multi-talented Mr. Amen is also a musician (his folk/folk rock music is on two CDs) and an artist working in acrylics on canvas. He travels widely giving readings, doing musical performances and conducting workshops. In addition, he founded and edits The Pedestal Magazine. • March 9: How I Killed Pluto (and Why It Had It Coming). In 2005, California Institute of Technology astronomer Mike Brown discovered Eris, a tenth “planet” bigger than Pluto. A few months later, Brown was getting hate mail from schoolchildren around the world. Talented Teens Sought
The 4th Annual Teen Art, Music and Poetry Festival will be held on April 16 from 1 to 4:30 at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI, 38 Old Country Rd. Talented teens are being sought to participate. This year, the event will be a fundraiser for Ethical Friends of Children, an outreach program that helps families in financial need by providing them with baby and children’s clothes, diapers, cribs, and other items. •Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.
•If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Call Janet Romeo, ext. 145.

Exhibit
The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery, Room 140, College Center Building, Nassau Community College, presents the exhibit Transforming Lives, which runs March 17. The exhibit features photographs of Uganda’s youth taken by artist and activist Stephen Shames of L.E.A.D. (Locate Educate Achieve Dream) Uganda. The nonprofit program collects donations to educate vulnerable children in Uganda. Shames visited Uganda while doing an assignment about AIDS in 2000. As he photographed the funeral of a woman who left behind five children, he formed a special bond with the youngest child, Sarah. Affected by his experience, Shames paid for Sarah’s siblings and other orphans to attend school. This experience inspired him to develop L.E.A.D Uganda in 2004.
