The Rangers were lead on Offense by Peter Carreca with 2 Doubles, 3 Rbi’s and 4 steals,CJ Riccobono with 2 hits ,1 Rbi and 2 steals,Stephen DeRocchis with 3 walks, Spencer Kern with 2 Rbi’s, David Klebanow with 2 hits, Dillon Hod with 3 Rbi’s and Marco Coluccio with and Rbi. The Cy Young Award goes to Philip Schurr, Justin Yang and Brett Figelman. Gold Glove Award goes to CJ Riccobono who made some outstanding plays at Short today, Peter Carreca, Philip Schurr, Brett Figelman, Ryan Gaudino, Marco Coluccio and Spencer Kern. Our Effort Award goes to Jared Murad. Good all around game by the whole Rangers Team.

Baxter’s Sporting Goods River Sharks
On a beautiful Opening Day April afternoon the Queen’s Garden Nursery Bears took the field against the Baxter’s Sporting Goods River Sharks. Under the experienced guidance of Coaches Lori and Sal, the Bears were focused and ready. Great defense, clutch pitching and a few big hits resulted in a 9-1 victory. Opening pitching by Christian ‘Crush Em’ Carrick, the ‘strike one’ king left the team up 5-0. Anthony ‘Put Em Out’ Pitre was simply spectacular for the final four innings. The first run of the game was simply great, Anthony ‘Tony The Tiger’ Lanzilotta stole home. Then a perfectly executed double steal followed by Matthew ‘Moose’ Vowinkle’s bullet triple to left center put two more on the scoreboard.
The second inning proved as exciting as the first. The crowd roared as two walks and a huge blast to center off Lanzilotta’s big bat brought in two more runs followed by a sac fly RBI from MVP Pitre. It was then a pitching duel until the fifth when a third team triple, this time off the wood of Carrick brought home two more men. Spectacular defense especially in the final innings helped hold a worthy opponent to only a single run. First baseman Yanni ‘ Golden Glove’ Rigos was solid, second baseman Brendan ‘ The Wall’ Nolty made a seemingly impossible play to end the game and right fielder Rich ‘ Lightening’ Lufrano brought the stands to their feet as he grabbed a catch in blinding sun. Anthony ‘ The Man’ Verde also contributed in the field. Corey ‘Rutkinator’ Rutkin caught an error free complete game and special thanks go to call-up George Vlantis.

Cellini Lodge Diamondbacks
It may have been a windy and chilly Opening Day for Merillon baseball, but that did not stop the Diamonbacks from coming out and putting forth a great effort against the Rangers. The strength of the Diamonbacks is their impressive pitching staff. Chris Bruccoleri and Nick Levkulic each threw two very strong innings and Abidin Dauti brought the heat for an inning. BrendanSlattery did a nice job behind the plate, handling the pitching staff. Daniel Mattei and Daniel Son displayed solid defense. Providing the offense was Matt Merolla who reached base in all three at bats, Michael Castelli who knocked in two runs, and Daniel Goldberg and Matthew Strocchia who each added RBIs. It was a good start to the spring season and the Diamonbacks are looking forward to heating up as the weather gets warmer.

Play Ball..Dominick Picirillo started the Mariners’ season with a lead-off triple and scored onJames Castaldi’s homerun to lead the Mariners to an opening day victory. Thomas Mangin also launched a long home run and Harrison Nettler brought a run in with his hot bat. Andrew Colgan pitched four scoreless innings aided by stellar defense by Nick Lopez who made a sliding catch in right-center to stop an Orioles rally. Catcher Michael Zuschlag didn’t allow a single stolen base through six innings and Jimmy Denara nearly turned a nifty double-play at second base. Also playing solid defense were Brendan Knupfer, Parth Patel and Shawn Chacko.

New Hyde Park Funeral Home Blue Jays (2)
What an amazing start to the season for Hand Rolled Bagel’s Reds. Elliot Weissman got the team started in the first inning with a near flawless pitching exhibition, followed up by hitless innings from the team’s other aces in the mound, Greg Capelle, Anthony DePompeis, and Nick Femia who held the Blue Jays to no runs over two innings. All told, the Reds’ pitchers capped off the day with a no hitter against the Blue Jays. The bats were also rolling with solid hits from Darren Yang, aggressive cuts from Raymond Gresalfi and a double from Elliot who ripped it to right field. On the field, Dylan Kareff was unstoppable at 2nd base making three stellar put outs, while both Matthew Baronci and Eric De Valle saved runs, grabbing line drives in the field. Mike Rose kept us in the game with a heads up play at second, tagging out the advancing player. We had speed on the bases from Jonny Lopez and Matthew Baronci who scored our only run. While the Reds lost the season opener 2-1, it was a stellar effort by all, and an indication of a great year to come. Ian Weissman

Costello’s Ace Hardware Rockies
The Stutzman Funeral Homes Brewers had a great day on the mound, in the field and at the plate. William Lentini pitched a scoreless inning striking out 2. At the plate he had a perfect day being hit by a pitch singling, walking driving in a run scoring a run and making a nice play at the mound to record an out. Sivas Paturi pitched a scoreless 4th inning striking out two and working out of abases loaded jam and also had a key hit in the 5th inning driving in a run. Matt Rivera had an excellent day saving the game with a scoreless 5th inning in which he struck out the side. He also make a great play in short center field to force a runner at second. Adrian Balkcom was a hitting force with three hard hit singles scoring a run driving in a run and stealing two bases. Jared Puntus pitched a perfect third inning striking out two, singles driving in a run and made a nice play at third base. Justin Tamara had an excellent game behind the plate calling a great game, making some excellent throws on steal attempts singling in the 2 run 5th inning and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning by striking out the last two batters. Sam Motelson had a key single in the 5th inning and make a nice play in the outfield to force a runner. Virag Shah had two excellent at bases working the count full both times. He also make two nice plays in the filed backing up throws to keep runners from advancing. Danny McCellan had a big single in the 5th inning to start a rally and made a nice play at third base. Aaron Lesser had a perfect day at the plate with a single and hot by pitch and scored a run. Frankie Stigliano had a great day behind the plate at catcher made a nice play in the filed backing up a throw at left filed and had two good at bats working thecount full both times. Ibrahim Khwaja had two good at bats working the count full both times and walking once. All and all a great game and great play by the Stutzman Funeral Homes Brewers in the filed, at the plate and on the mound.
Merillon BAB Mechanical Fireballs (8) vs.
Merillon Signs of Love.com Bolts (12)
The Fireballs kicked off the season vs a tough Bolt team. Pitcher Isabella Fazzolari started on the mound striking out several batters and pitching one scoreless inning. Casey Sanders came in relief and did an equally fine job of finding the strike zone. Casey also smacked out two solid singles. Sophia Leeds drove in two runs. Michaela Zabicki, Silvana Seidita, and Stephanie Zovich were rock solid on defense playing multiple positions. Elise Gonzalez, Melanie Feinsilver, Rachel Moss and Daniella Brancato all reached base via walks. Jillian Bergman hit a single. Julia Kosinski and Samantha Grenard were hit by the pitch and stole some bases. Gia Yetikyel in her first game ever took some nice cuts at the plate. A good job all around by both teams. GO FIREBALLS!!

Grant Thornton LLP Pirates 1
In an impressive start to the 2011 Minors campaign, the Rays opened the season with a strong 12-1 victory over the potent Pirates. The keys to the win were pitching, defense and smart, heads-up baserunning. The pitching prowess was led by the staff of Sean O’Connor (3 Ks over 2 hitless innings), Sean McClellan (3 Ks in a 1-2-3 inning), Brian Volk (helped himself with 2 stellar defensive plays in a scoreless inning) and Joey Jacobs (4 Ks over two strong innings). Defensive stalwarts included Angelo Ferrigno, Jake Dieber, Charlie Goodwin, Evan Chaleff, Matt Solomon, Jack Tucker, Tyler Dauble and Joe Sullivan. While the Rays did not overwhelm with the bat, instead taking advantage of a bit of early-season wildness from the Pirate pitchers, strong ABs were turned in by Jack Tucker, Brian Volk, Matthew Solomon and Sean McClellan. Great way to start the season guys!
