Dinner Dance, Installation Held on
April 7 at Knights of Columbus
The Hicksville Community Council’s 41st Anniversary Dinner Dance Installation was held on April 7 at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Receiving the President’s Award for 2011 was Lionel Chitty, president of the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce, for his tireless efforts to unite the entire community for the betterment of Hicksville and to actively work on the Revitalization Plan. This year’s Community Service Award went to the Hicksville Council of PTAs. Attending on their behalf were President Pam LaMonda-Jaffie and Secretary Francine DeAgresta. The Council is a coordinating body comprised of representatives from each individual PTA working toward the same goal – excellence in educational opportunities of all Hicksville students. Hicksville’s own Bill Foley was the recipient of the coveted Dick Evers Community Service Award for the time and effort spent beautifying Kennedy Park and Foley Gardens.
As always, guests representing many organizations and businesses as well as local government were in attendance. State Senator Jack Martins, NYS Assemblyman Mike Montesano and Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker, as well as Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, Councilmen Joe Muscarella and Tony Macagnone, Town Clerk Steve Labriola and Receiver of Taxes James Stefanich were all on hand to present citations and to wish the honorees and the Hicksville Community their congratulations for jobs well done.
Officers and directors installed were: Harry Single, president; Joel Berse, first vice president; Val Pakaluk, second vice president; Tony Macagnone, honorary vice president, Richard Althaus, treasurer and Bonnie Keyer, secretary and webmaster. Directors renewing a three-year term included Stan Kobin, Lloyd Campbell and Bill Schuckman. They join an extraordinary group of volunteers who serve as directors of this notable organization. They are: Janet Bergholtz, Nick Brigandi, Stephanie Sokenis, Mark Thomas, Nick Sarandis, Mary Orlando, Tom Bruno, Wendi Slavsky and Charlie Montana.
For the past 41 years, the aims of the Hicksville Community Council have been to forward the education and enrichment of people living in Hicksville about past, present and future events in the community. Perfect examples of these goals are the upcoming meetings in May and June. On May 5, Andrew Lockwood, attorney turned Certified College Planner, will disclose inside secrets of college financial aid. This surely will be of importance to parents and even grandparents. Maureen Bright, superintendent of schools and Elizabeth Goldfrank, assistant director, Hicksville Public Library will present their 2011-2012 budgets with discussions. Eric Alexander, working with Vision L.I., the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce, the Hicksville Community Council and the Town of Oyster Bay on plans to revitalize Hicksville downtown will give a brief update. On June 2 a special Community Expo is planned bringing together local groups/organizations and local businesses. You don’t want to miss this one.
All meetings take place at the William Bennett Community Center located at 28 West Carl St. and begin at 7 p.m. Refreshments available.
