At a recent New Hyde Park Village Board meeting it was announced by trustee Lawrence Montreuil that the Annual Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the New Hyde Park VFW and the New Hyde Park American Legion in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park will be held on Saturday, May 28.
The parade will assemble on Hillside Boulevard and step-off at 10 a.m. The marchers will then head east on Jericho Turnpike and stop at New Hyde Park Village Hall for a brief ceremony at the village green with the members of the Gold Star families.
The parade will then re-assemble and head north on New Hyde Park Road to Lincoln Boulevard and the corner of Wilton Street to New Hyde Park Memorial Park.
When the parade is fully assembled at the park there will be a wreath-laying ceremony and a brief ceremony highlighted by an address by New Hyde Park Village Mayor Daniel Petruccio.
The Illustrated News called the New Hyde Park VFW G&E Linder Post to verify the facts of the parade and VFW spokesman William Hothan added, “The veterans would like to salute the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce for displaying, for many years, 54 flags on flag poles, along the line of march of the parade in honor of the 54 war dead in New Hyde Park.”
Right after the announcements are made, at the meeting, New Hyde Park Mayor Daniel Petruccio calls for questions from the public.
A resident, who has been a most of the recent meetings once again got up and related to the mayor and the board the problems he has with the oversized trucks and payloaders that continue to clog Second Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets. He said he could have written out at least 10 tickets if he had been with code enforcement. He pointed out that one particular car was parked from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and didn’t move and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. because there were no tickets issued. The resident said, “What is going on is that one guy pulls his car out and everyone else moves up and that first guy comes around and parks in the empty space.”
Mayor Petruccio took down all the complaints of the residents and said he would look into the many problems and make sure they could be solved as soon as possible.
Mayor Petruccio also added that he was going to set up a meeting with the owners of the buildings in question and discuss with them the parking restrictions on those blocks.

Deputy Mayor Robert Lofaro
Deputy Mayor Lofaro said that the village has always cleaned the area along the Long Island Rail Road, but he said the railroad actually sent out a crew to cleanup that area, which he said was a big surprise.
It was also mentioned that the kiosk for the bus stop is now adorned with beautiful artwork from the students at the New Hyde Park schools.
Katies Run
Mayor Petruccio also announced that Katies Run this year would be on June 26 at 9:30. He said it was such a nice community event and hoped that everyone in the village would become involved either in running or helping out with the run.
This run was started to honor the life of Katie McBride, whose foundation was set up by her parents to honor her memory and the families of all childhood leukemia victims and other life-threatening diseases. Last year the run raised $11,000 which was given to Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and the family support services it provides. Registration is open now for participation in this year’s run. Directly after the run there will be a barbeque at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Road, where you can also register for the run or to volunteer.
