Two volunteers with rock CAN roll have been selected by Citizens Bank as the “Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week” for working to alleviate hunger in Nassau County through fundraising and awareness efforts.
Jane Walsh and Lauren Castellane, teachers from Farmingdale organized food drives and fundraising events with assistance from their students at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School.
Rock CAN Roll is a nonprofit, hunger-relief organization that partners with rock concerts, schools, corporations and private individuals to collect and distribute nutritious food to those living with hunger and in poverty.
The “Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week” recognizes the work of volunteers who have performed outstanding community service on behalf of nonprofit organizations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“We are thrilled to honor Jane Walsh and Lauren Castellane as the ‘Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week,’” said James P. Gaspo, President, Citizens Bank New York. “Their dedication and creativity have had a tremendous impact on the community and have shown hundreds of middle school students the power of volunteerism.”
Walsh and Castellane worked with students and community agencies during the 2010-11 school year to deliver more than 5,000 food items to organizations within five miles of their school. They also created and directed a dance-a-thon routine for 100 eighth-grade students that raised more than $8,500 for local food agencies.
