Over 60…And Getting Younger: August 18, 2011

My TV Watching

I do not watch television in the morning. The last time I watched something in the morning was Sept. 11, 2001. I received a call from Adam, my son, who worked in the Wall Street area.

I can watch a World Cup Soccer Match or Australian tennis match, even if it is broadcast at 2 or 3 a.m., but that’s about it for the morning. My television viewing really starts at about 4 p.m. with Judge Judith Sheindlin. She seems to properly enumerate the law, with all its intricacies, to her TV audience. Of course, she is strident and punishes severely those who speak out of turn. The cases are not earthshaking, but she does carry out the true sense of the law.

I then turn off the set until about 7 p.m. to watch a Seinfeld episode. The four characters interact so beautifully and so inanely that I occasionally laugh out loud at their situations.

At 8 p.m. I am addicted to Bill O’Reilly. Even though he interrupts his guests gauchely, he gets to the heart of the news. He is a patriotic American and often brings a sharp and witty slant to the reporting. I like his guests Juan Williams, Dennis Miller and Laura Ingram as they are unafraid to challenge the powers that be.

I am not much into American Idol, Dancing With the Stars or The Bachelor, even though my wife calls me from upstairs to watch them. Occasionally, I do.

Recently I have become a fan of 48 hours and Investigative Discovery on channel 171 because they cover a case dramatically from start to finish. They dramatize with actors what they do not have on film; they keep the suspense moving smoothly.

I am also a sucker for Jeopardy, even though I am less proficient in answering than I was in my younger years. At times it can make me uncomfortable, but Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm delivers a spark that has my friends talking all week.

In regard to the news, Katie Couric was not my favorite, but Diane Sawyer is watchable, along with Brian Williams. A classic through the years has been 60 Minutes, although I do not appreciate when they take a political view and the presentation isn’t objective.

This review has not yet mentioned some of the sports events I love, such as the Mets (even when they play poorly), Knicks’ basketball games and both the Jets and the Giants.

I have just expressed my choices in TV watching- please feel free to tell me if you agree or disagree with my choices by e-mail.
