Dedication of the Floral Park 9-11 Memorial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. at Floral Park Village Hall, One Floral Blvd. The public is invited to attend the ceremonies and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
The program will start with the unveiling of the 5,000 pound steel relic, which was a beam at the World Trade Center, a piece of which was obtained by the Floral Park Firefighters Eric O’Connor and Mike Saville. The relic was brought to Floral Park on April 27 by a convoy comprised of Floral Park firefighters and the Nassau County Fire Riders.
In the following weeks, WTC Relic Committee was formed, consisting of the Mayor Tom Tweedy, village officials, members of the fire department, local architect Frank Gunther, local engineer Tim Tweedy and Frank deOliveira of Alliance Welding. The committee has worked tirelessly for the past months planning and designing a suitable memorial.
Following the unveiling of the memorial, the colors will be presented by the Floral Park Fire Department, Police Department and American Legion Color Guards.
Floral Park Memorial High School student Janina Salorio will sing the National Anthem and Pastor Gainus Sykes of the Floral Park Memorial Methodist Church will give the opening prayer.
Father John McCartney of Our Lady of Victor R.C. Church will give the blessing of the memorial and Mother Abigail Murphy of St. Elisabeth’s and St. Thomas Episcopal Churches will read a psalm.
Local Eagle Scouts will place roses on the names of the 11 local people who were victims of the attacks and whose names have been inscribed on the memorial. The Nassau County Firefighters Pipe and Drum Corps will play Amazing Grace and Pastor John Flack of Christ Lutheran Church will give the benediction.
During the ceremony, the following streets will be closed to traffic: Tulip and Verbena avenues; Floral Boulevard and Carnation Avenues; and Carnation and Verbena avenues.
