Lamonaca and Barbato among recipients of town’s police service award
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead board honored Police Officer Paul Lamonaca, and Detective John Barbato of the Eighth Squad, who were among the 25 officers from surrounding departments at a ceremony, on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at the Town Hall in Hempstead.
Father Gerard Gordon, the Nassau County Police Chaplain, provided a brief invocation, and Alyse Skoller, accompanied by Gloria Elliot, performed the National Anthem. The Nassau County Police Color Guard Unit retired the colors before each of the 25 officers were honored with medals and certificates.
“From solving murders and extensive undercover work to patrolling our streets, our police honorees have distinguished themselves as local heroes,” said Kate Murray. “The town is proud to have the opportunity to recognize those who serve and protect our residents.” Murray acknowledged many local officials, friends and families of the officers, their peers and supervisors who were in attendance.
Murray said, “On a daily basis, the Nassau County Police Department has been witness to the dedication, commitment and contribution of Officer Paul Lamonaca. In the community our honoree has been a trusted friend and loyal public servant.
“As part of his responsibilities with the Problem Oriented Unit, the officer maintains an harmonious and respectful relationship with local officials, schools, houses of worship, civic groups and individual residents. Officer Lamonaca’s involvement with community activities, area concerns and group functions, helps improve the quality of life for people who live and work within the 8th Precinct.
“Boundless enthusiasm and unwavering commitment are characteristics of the officer’s daily performance. He walks comfortably in all aspects of community life and he deals respectfully with everyone.
“He is a trusted face and respected voice within the 8th Precinct and a role model for fellow officers in the department.”
Additionally, Murray shared the noted accomplishment of Eighth Squad’s Detective John Barbato. Murray said, “The Police Service Award spotlight shines brightly upon a distinguished and faithful member of the Nassau County Police Department. An 18-year veteran with seven years in the Eighth Squad, Detective John Barbato has constantly displayed the highest level of professionalism.
“His interaction with the public and his dedication to police work have earned him continued acclaim and adulation. In a career of exceptional police work, John Barbato has exhibited remarkable investigative skills and his instincts and insights are beyond reproach.
“In the past year alone, Detective Barbato has compiled 35 arrests. A man of immense pride and dogged determination, the Detective represents his department in fine and fitting fashion.
“Throughout his career, Detective Barbato’s work ethic and police skills have proven exemplary. His service to the community and devotion to law enforcement have qualified him as a worthy recipient of the Police Service Award.”
The officers were honored for putting their lives on the line, pursuing criminals, maintaining order and facilitating rescues in crisis situations. To conclude the 14th annual Police Service Awards ceremonies, Father Gerard Gordon gave the benediction.
Murray said, “I would like to thank the men and women in police service in Hempstead Town. These enforcement professionals make significant sacrifices every day to maintain our superlative quality of life and ensure the safety of all residents.”
