Mayor’s Report: October 6, 2011

Rosh Hashanah

The board of trustees and village staff join me in extending wishes for a very Happy New Year to village residents.

Backflow Tests Mandatory for Lawn Irrigation Systems

I would like to advise that a Final Notice Reminder for the test of the Backflow Prevention Assembly will be mailed to backflow device owners on or about Oct.15, 2011.

The purpose for the notification is to reach out and alert those customers who have not complied with the law and had their devices tested. This will give those customers enough time before the end of the year to achieve a test. The Nassau County Health Department has mandated all devices must be tested annually and has designated the Water Purveyor, (Village of Garden City) responsible for enforcement. The Health Department considers all untested devices a hazardous threat to the water supply. As such, they have given the authority to the Water Purveyor, to shut off water services to residences who do not conform. The village could incur a fine from the Nassau County Department of Health, which then could be passed on to the residences.

Residents who have historically had their devices tested in the fall, will receive a final notice. The village has the addresses on file of those who previously conformed to the mandate and we thank you for your continued efforts.

Village Cleanup — Tropical Storm Irene

My continued compliments to the Department of Public Works for the job that they have done and continue to do as the result of the damage that Tropical Storm Irene did to the village. The cleanup continues and I would like to remind you that residents can either place their rubbish at the curb for pick up or drop off their yard waste at the Village Municipal Yard which is located on Cherry Valley Avenue, south of the Community Park entrance. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A permit, in the amount of $15, can be obtained at Village Hall and is in effect for the life of the car.

Please Do Your Part to Keep Garden City Pedestrian Friendly

Residents are reminded that it is their responsibility to maintain the shrubs and trees on their property to assure that branches do not overhang and obstruct the Incorporated Village’s sidewalks and walkways, by doing your part to keep Garden City a pedestrian friendly community.

Board of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule

The board of trustees meetings for the month of October are on Thursday, Oct. 6; and Thursday, Oct. 20. A special workshop meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6, for a presentation by the Committee to Save St. Paul’s to the board of trustees. This meeting is open to the public. The meetings will be held in the Board Room at Village Hall and will begin at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a firsthand perspective.

Village’s Website

I invite residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s homepage under the Heading of the Fire Department is a sub-heading “Home Safety Tips,” which includes information regarding propane barbecue grills and housekeeping for fire prevention, etc.
