Cancer Bereavement Group
Adults dealing with the loss of a loved one to cancer are invited to join Winthrop-University Hospital’s free Bereavement Group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sessions will be held for six consecutive Thursdays (Oct. 13 through Nov. 17) at the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion, Suite ML-5, 1300 Franklin Ave., Garden City. Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death and is part of the normal process of reacting to a loss. Individuals may experience grief as a mental, physical, social or emotional reaction. Although these reactions are normal, the process can be isolating, but supportive services can help. The group is being conducted by Mary Rzeszut, LMSW, from Winthrop’s Institute for Cancer Care. Sessions are free, but registration is required. You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown
The Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance presents the children’s musical You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, which will be performed at the Mainstage Theatre Oct. 14 through 16 and Oct. 21 through 23. Based on the 1999 Broadway revival, the play takes place on an ordinary day in the life of the beloved children’s character. It’s a day that’s made up of little moments picked from all the days of Charlie Brown – from Valentine’s Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, from bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit evening – all mixed in with the lives of his friends. Performances 7 p.m. each Friday and 2 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. Tickets cost $9 per person; $6 for those aged 12 and under. Design Wars
Nassau Community College fashion design students will compete against one another in “Design Wars,” an interactive design competition to take place at Roosevelt Field beginning at 1 p.m. The event is presented locally by Winthrop University Hospital. In September, eight NCC fashion design students were paired with a “dynamic Long Island woman” and challenged with creating a custom red carpet look inspired by the model’s choice of celebrity, from Catherine Zeta-Jones to Jennifer Anniston to Sophia Loren. Under the guidance of Nassau Marketing/Retailing/Fashion Professor Sharyne Wolfe, the students sketched designs for their client. They then drafted a pattern for the design, constructed the garment and created the ensemble, all the while staying on a budget of $100 for materials, provided by Roosevelt Field. The designs will be revealed for the first time when they are modeled on the Simon Fashion Now runway by the women who inspired the looks.

Celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors
Breast cancer survivors, family, friends and the community will come together on for the annual Breast Cancer Celebration of Survivorship of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Breast Cancer Awareness Expo/Walk

The focus of LAHH is to provide customized services to patients to relieve some of the stress and worry a cancer diagnosis and ensuing treatment creates. Poetry Event
Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will be hosting a poetry event featuring Mary Mackey at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on Molloy College’s Rockville Centre campus, 1000 Hempstead Ave. This event is free and open to the public. An open reading will follow the featured poet. Featured poet Mary Mackey’s poetry has been praised for its beauty, precision, originality and extraordinary range. American Chamber Ensemble

Long Island Fall Prairie Walk
Ever see a prairie? You do not have to go west. The Friends of Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College is conducting walks on the 19-acre remnant LI prairie, once 60,000 acres. With few trees it was a habitat of the sun with 250 species of flowers and grasses – many at their tallest and most colorful in the fall. Walks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 21 and 28; Nov. 4. Nassau Community College Professor of biology Betsy Gulotta, Conservation Project manager, leads people on a path as she points to goldenrods, butterfly weed and blue curls, and identifies the interesting (as their names suggest) grasses: big bluestem and little bluestem, prairie beard grass, Indian grass and switchgrass, all populating the western prairies. Directions: take Meadowbrook Pky. to Exit M4, follow signs to Coliseum, Museum Row and Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Once on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., turn right into East Parking Area for Nassau Community College. Adoption Programs
Families interested in learning more about foster care and adoption are invited to attend free public programs at the LI Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave. Presented by the Bi-County: Nassau/Suffolk Adoption Exchange and the Adoptive Parents Committee/LI, these programs will provide pragmatic answers to your questions regarding the adoption process and put you in touch with local and state resources to call upon to during the foster care/adoption journey:
•Oct. 15: Families are invited to workshops offered by the Adoptive Parents Committee/LI. Adoption attorney Jeanine Castagna will address pre-adoption issues in a workshop, “Red Flags: What to Look for When Adopting Independently.” Andrew Vaughan, Ph.D., executive director of the early intervention agency Up We Go, Inc., will address post-adoption issues in a presentation entitled “Maximum Strength Parenting to Raise Maximum Strength Kids.” The final presentation focuses on the waiting process. Moderated by an APC board member, participants can get answers to questions during an interactive round table session.
•Oct. 20: The Children’s Museum will host the Bi-County: Nassau/Suffolk Adoption Exchange for an evening devoted to “Adoption Options.”The 6 to 9 p.m. adults-only program, is designed as a “one-stop” information source for anyone considering public adoption. Representatives from the Departments of Social Services in Nassau and Suffolk counties, will be joined by NYS representatives, adoption agencies and adoption support groups. The evening’s format will allow adults to talk with all the key players you might encounter on the road to adoption. •Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:

•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children.
