Blood Drive
Parkway Community Church, 95 Stewart Ave., Hicksville, will host a blood drive from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone who donates will receive a free pumpkin from Parkway Church’s annual Pumpkin Patch, which runs through the end of month. Donors must be between the ages of 16 and 75; 16 year olds will need parental permission and must bring ID and proof of age; anyone older than 75 who would like to give will need to bring a doctor’s note. Fall Garage/Street Sale
The Hicksville Kiwanis will be having its Garage/Street Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of 404 Jerusalem Ave. (across the street from CVS and 7-11). Come help support your community and people who are in need. All proceeds will be donated to local food pantries and to help fun Kiwanis’ six scholarship awards. You never know what treasures you might find.

New Shalom Sunday Family Play Group
Join the new Sunday morning family play group located at the East Meadow Jewish Center, 1400 Prospect Ave. The play group will meet once a month on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Today is the first session. Parents and their children, toddlers to 5 years old, are invited to attend. Activities will include story telling, arts and crafts, play with peers, Jewish holiday crafts, music, snacks and more. Gray Wolf Program
The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club hosts 4 or 5 educational programs each year. These programs, which take place at the Special Events Building in Eisenhower Park, cover a wide variety of topics relating to the outdoors. The programs are free of charge and open to the public. The next program is scheduled 7 pm. A representative from the National Wolfwatcher Coalition will discuss the re-introduction of the gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park as well as their work with regional wolves. Fashion Fantasy 2011
The Council of Auxiliaries of United Cerebral Palsy of NC, Inc., invite you to Fashion Fantasy 2011, at The Carltun in Eisenhower Park. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m., with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar preceding it at 6:30 p.m. Fashions are by Debra Van Horn with furs by Maximilian. The honoree this year is Julie Marchesella, past president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce, currently vice president of the NC Council of Chambers and owner of Queen of Hearts in Merrick, a generous supporter, advocate and friend of ucpn for many years. The event is one of the largest fund raisers produced by council and helps support the programs ucpn provides for more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities. Port North Basketball
Port North is a 3 year old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. While the team has enjoyed success winning championships in 7th and 8th grade divisions this past season the emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for several experienced players in 6th, 7th and 8th grades and a forward for a 9th grade team. •The Community Program open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted.
•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers as well as parents whose children use drugs. All inquiries are confidential.
•Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. The group will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Preregistration required.
•Young Adult Drug Addiction Group for people 18 to 21 who are recovering from drug addiction. The goals are to enhance skills, increase self-awareness and work toward a drug and alcohol free life. The group meets Thursdays at 8 p.m. All inquiries are confidential.
Exhibit
An ongoing exhibit of rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and fossils, butterflies and moths and historical artifacts and curiosities in Hicksville’s historic 1895 Heitz Place Courthouse. A non-profit metaphysical study group held at Levittown Hall, Levittown Pky., Hicksville. Membership is $15 for individuals; $25 joint membership per year. HUMC Food Pantry Open
Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The pantry is open on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Non-perishable foods, paper goods and hygiene items are given to our neighbors in need. Contact us if you can help in any way. Thrift Shop
The Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville.
