Every Woman Counts Campaign

Holiday Concert
The Waldorf Choral Society will perform its annual holiday concert at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City. The Healing Power of Music
The Hofstra Symphony Orchestra, directed by Professor David Ramael, is teaming up with the LI Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect to present a concert that is both a celebration of children and the healing power of music. The concert will be presented at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, Hofstra University, South Campus, Hempstead. The program will include a 2:15 p.m. pre-concert lecture by Professor Ramael and Anthony Zenkus, director of education at CCAN. The 3 p.m. concert will include two famous child-themed compositions, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn). Focusing on “The Road to Publication.” The featured speaker is Jericho resident Ellen Meister, the author of three novels and a Hofstra Continuing Education writing instructor. Her most recent book, The Other Life, appears on several 2011 Best Fiction of the Year lists, was singled out by the American Booksellers Association for the prestigious Indie Next list, and is under option with HBO for a television series. Meister will discuss her road to finding an agent and getting published, and will introduce the paperback version of The Other Life, which is scheduled for national release on Dec. 6. Support Group Meeting/Bowling Outing
The North Shore-LIJ Health System will hold a free pulmonary hypertension support group meeting and bowling outing from 6 to 8 p.m. at AMF Bowling Lanes, 987 Stewart Ave., Garden City. The program is open to patients with pulmonary hypertension and their guests. Each patient may bring one friend or family member to the event. For those who choose not to bowl, extra tables and chairs will be available so group members can socialize. Gun Hill Road
A powerful and critically-acclaimed film about a young man exploring his sexuality and the subsequent impact on himself and his family. Model Train Show
NC Executive Edward P. Mangano and Trainville Hobby Depot will host “Take the Planes to the Trains II” on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Museum Row, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. This year the show will feature exhibits from local train clubs including: Trainville Hobby Depot’s N Scale Layout, Long Island Hotrack, Long Island Traction, Great South Bay Club O Scale Layout, Trainmasters of Babylon, Long Island N Trak and N-Scale T-Trak. Business, Social Development, Human Rights In a Transitional World
A talk to be presented by Dr. David B. Lowry as the annual human rights presentation of Amnesty International Group 74. Jewish Film Festival
Congregation Beth Israel is pleased is holding its second film in the Jewish Film Festival. The title is Arranged and is about two new teachers in a Brooklyn elementary school, an Orthodox Jew (Rochel) and a Muslim (Nasira). While students and co-workers expect friction, the two women discover they have a shared expectation of entering into arranged marriages. As they experience tension between their traditional cultures and life in contemporary America, Rochel and Nasira form a special bond. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress
A comedy focusing on five bridesmaids at a society wedding in Tennessee. Just after the ceremony, the women are hiding out in an upstairs bedroom. The dialogue in the play is as frothy as the hideous dresses the bridesmaids are forced to wear. There’s Mindy, the groom’s outspoken, out-lesbian older sister; the bride’s bitter sibling Meredith; Georgeanne, the tightly wound, hard-drinking pal; world-weary Trisha; and 21-year-old Frances, who answers every tempting offer of a drink or smoke with “I can’t – I’m a Christian.” All five women have some personal history with the groom, a charming but nasty predator named Tommy Valentine. Presented by the Nassau Community College Theatre and Dance Department Dec. 14-18 at the NCC Mainstage Theatre. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Dec. 18, when it is at 3 p.m. Tickets, which cost $9 per person, are $7 for seniors age 55 and over. •Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.
•If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. Exhibits
•The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College presents its 2011 Art Faculty Exhibition, through Dec. 22. The exhibition will highlight Maureen Palmieri and Robert Toedter as featured artists. The theme of the show – Borders: Visible and Invisible – reaches across disciplines to define the many borders that we as global citizens observe, react to, become freed from and are limited by. The exhibit is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. Artwork will be on display in the showcases in the College Center Building and the G Building as well as the gallery. •Local award winning artist Philip Costa currently has an example of his work on display at Barnes Gallery, corner of Nassau Blvd. and Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Phil has just completed a well-received one-man art show for The Sage Foundation in Glen Cove where many fellow artists who attended attested to his outstanding treatments of the pastel medium. Commissioned pastel paintings are done from ordinary photographs and then transformed into paintings by Phil’s unique style. The public is invited to visit and view Phil’s work.
