Update — LIPA Emergency Work Washington Avenue and Transverse Road
As previously advised, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) will be working in the vicinity of Washington Avenue and Transverse Road to repair a major underground electrical cable that was determined to be in need of emergency replacement. We have been informed this week that this work will not be completed until sometime in January.
This work has necessitated the closure of Washington Avenue between Eleventh Street and Supreme Court Drive. Night security personnel from LIPA are at the site from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Residents who have driveways on Washington Avenue can park on the side streets. In an effort to detour traffic away from residential areas, detour signs directing motorists to County Seat Drive have been added on Old Country Road. The Village is working closely with LIPA to add more detour signs on Old Country Road as well as on Eleventh Street. The Garden City Police Department has also added additional traffic patrols to nearby residential areas that has resulted in several traffic tickets being issued; two arrests and three impounds.
As the village receives more information from LIPA and Bancker, it will be placed on our website — www.garden cityny.net, on the homepage, by clicking on “Village Alert Messages.” I will also include updates in this column as well. If you require any further information, please call the Department of Public Works at 465-4004.
Annual Leaf Collection Ending
The Department of Public Works has done another excellent job with the annual leaf removal/recycling program. The last day that leaves can be raked into the streets by residents and their landscapers for Village collection will be on Monday, Dec. 5. This is necessary to enable the Department of Public Works to convert the vehicles for road sanding and for ice and snow control.
Board of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule
The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees’ meeting will be on Thursday, Dec. 15.
