Go Red for Women
Feb. 3, 2012 will mark the seventh annual American Heart Association National Wear Red Day for Women to raise awareness that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 health threat facing women today. Unfortunately, most people still do not know that heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death for women. These two diseases kill more than 480,000 women in the United States every year; more than the next five causes of death combined, including all cancers. On Long Island, more than 5,600 women die of heart disease and stroke each year.
One of the components of Go Red for Women will be National “Wear Red Day for Women” on Feb. 3. On Friday, Feb. 3, wear something red — a red dress, tie, jacket, scarf, hat, blouse or shirt. Go Red For Women and show your commitment to reducing risk, improving health and saving women’s lives. Some of the activities planned for this year can be viewed on their websites www.americanheart.org and www.goredforwomen.org.
Yield for Pedestrian in Crosswalk
Residents are again reminded of the “Yield for Pedestrian in Crosswalk” signs at the three mid-block crosswalks on Seventh Street between Franklin and Hilton avenues.
State Vehicle and Traffic Law states that motorists must yield to pedestrians who are crossing a roadway within the striped crosswalks. A motorist seeing a pedestrian entering the crosswalk must stop and permit the pedestrian to cross the street. Cars approaching the stopped vehicle from the rear are not permitted to pass.
The Garden City Police Department has been instructed to vigorously enforce these regulations and your cooperation when driving on Seventh Street and Rockaway Avenue near the east entrance to the Middle School will help to make these crosswalks safer for pedestrians.
A word of caution, however, to the pedestrian — do not place undue reliance on the signs or the crosswalks, even though the law requires vehicles to yield the right-of-way — they may not do so.
Board of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees’ meetings will be on Thursday, Feb. 2, and on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m.
Village’s Upgraded Website
Last week visitors to the Village of Garden City’s website got a firsthand preview of the village’s newly upgraded website which I am sure you will find both helpful and informative. Our appreciation to Village Clerk Brian Ridgway and Thomas McGerty of the Village Recreation and Parks Department for this in house upgrade which was performed by them without incurring the need or cost of an outside vendor.
Please be sure to visit this website (www.gardencityny.net) for information with regard to all the various village departments, as well as meeting dates for the various village boards and community events which now includes much more detailed information with regard to the Village of Garden City that I know residents as well as visitors will find helpful.
Well Check Program/ Inclement Weather
Fortunately, the snowfall last weekend was insignificant to what we experienced in the last two years. However, walking and driving were somewhat dicey, which reminds us of the need to look in on our neighbors who would have been housebound due to inclement weather.
We remind everyone that the Garden City Police Department has a Well Check Program, which provides a service for the residents. The Police Department’s Well Check Program is available to any senior citizen, a person with a disability, or to any person suffering a hardship. Police Commissioner Ernest J. Cipullo has advised me that residents can contact the Police Department and be placed on its Well Check Log. Each morning, a person who is placed on the Police Department’s Log can call to check in and let us know if they are okay or in need of assistance. If a person who is on the list does not contact the Police Department, an attempt will be made to contact that person either by phone and/or in person. Any person who wishes to be placed on the Garden City Police Department’s Well Check Log may contact the Desk Officer at (516) 465-4101.
