Raising Socially Successful Children
The “language” of relationship includes verbal courtesy, accepting body language, respect for space and listening skills. Today’s children tend to hide behind technology and often fail to develop those all-important interpersonal skills. The Parent Program Committee of Portledge School presents an interactive workshop entitled “Raising Socially Successful Children,” at 8:45 a.m. at 355 Duck Pond Rd., Locust Valley, in Bahnik Hall. The guest speaker will be Dr. Carolyn Rassiger, who will share tools and strategies with parents to help them teach and model social skills, preparing children for success in the real world. •Feb. 18: Bird Banding and Breakfast. For those over age 12, this early morning program will instill a sense of wonder. Learn how birds are captured and banded, why it is important in understanding their health, migration, and ecology, and even have a chance to help with the release of these delicate creatures. •Join the sanctuary staff for fun winter explorations. Each day has an exciting theme focused on nature and science. Winter Sanctuary Adventures activities include nature hikes, crafts, stories, live animal presentations, and environmentally-themed games. Teacher naturalists will be guiding groups of children ages 4-12 through these fun filled days, as they explore nature’s winter wonderland. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Needs Oyster Bay Recruits
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in the Oyster Bay area is recruiting new members. They are needed to assist the Coast Guard in performing Homeland Security missions and to implement the Coast Guard’s many recreational boating safety programs. No experience or boat is required. Muttontown Unitarian |Universalist Fellowship
The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the Arts, History and Sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting. •Bereaved Parents of the USA. This national self-help support group charters the LI NY Chapter. •Locust Valley Garden Club. The Executive Board of the Locust Valley Garden Club invites new members to join. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. at Bailey Arboretum. Social Security: Getting Acquainted with Social Security Services will be conducted by Village of Bayville resident, Vincent Serio, a recently retired Social Security Administration agent with many years of experience in the field of Social Security services. He will discuss retirement, disability, survivor and Medicare benefits, in addition to the development and adjudication of the new prescription plan. There will be a question and answer period during which attendees will be given the opportunity to discuss concerns and get clarification on all aspects of Social Security.
