Governor Cuomo’s Budget Address Presentation

St. Patrick’s Parade

The festivities begin at the 1 p.m. Mass at St. Martin of Tours Church. Immediately after Mass at 2 p.m., Grand Marshal Eamon Fitzgerald, family, friends and visiting dignitaries will join the color guard, pipe bands and marching units in front of St. Martin’s. Featured in this year’s parade are the Nassau Firefighters Pipes & Drums, the American Celtic Pipe Band, the Tara Band and the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes & Drums along with veteran’s groups, historic re-enactment groups, AOH members, fire departments, scouts and the perennial favorite – the K-9 Brigade. The parade route begins on Central Ave., Bethpage, down Stewart Ave. and returning on Broadway to the Showmobile where the Grand Marshal and elected officials will review the parade.

Maurer Foundation Flamingo Bowl

An organization of volunteers that does free home repairs for low-income families particularly those who are elderly, disabled and/or single parent families at no cost to the homeowner. 2 p.m. at the Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd. Public Meeting on Farmingdale Plaza Cleaners Site

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in conjunction with the State Department of Health, will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m., to present a proposed clean-up plan for the Farmingdale Plaza Cleaners site in Farmingdale. The meeting will be held at Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd. DEC and DOH staff will describe the contents of the cleanup proposal (called a Proposed Remedial Action Plan). The off-site groundwater is still being investigated to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of the volatile organic compounds plume. The site is listed as a Class “2” site in the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites (list of State Superfund sites). A Class 2 site represents a significant threat to public health or the environment, action is required.

Mobile Town Hall Meeting

County Executive Edward Mangano will be hosting new Mobile Town Hall Meetings at different locations throughout the county. The meetings will provide residents the opportunity to share their views and have their concerns addressed by representatives of the County Executive’s Office and county departments. “I welcome all residents to attend and participate in these Mobile Town Hall Meetings. These meetings provide an important opportunity to hear directly from the residents and provide them with services the county departments have to offer,” said Mangano. The meetings occur two days per week at various locations. The next local meeting will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Farmingdale Library, 116 Merrits Rd.

Long Island Rose Society

Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Plainview Old-Bethpage Library. The featured speaker is Ann Marie Zawistowski, the curator of The Rose Garden at Old Westbury Gardens. She will present a program entitled “The Organic Rose Garden,” the history of transitioning to organic care in a public setting, the highs and lows. Fashion Show

From the Reel to the Runway, FHS PTA Fashion Show 2012, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Farmingdale H.S. Commons. Tickets are available for $15/adults and $5/students. Pediatric Cancer Research Fundraiser

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation will hold a local fundraising event at Jackie Reilly’s Irish Pub & Restauarant in Bethpage from noon to 7 p.m. to raise money in support of pediatric cancer research. At this event volunteers agree to have their heads shaved in solidarity and support of kids who lose their hair due to the harsh after effects of chemotherapy treatments. The “shavees” ask their friends and family to make monetary donations on their “heads” and then on the day of the event, volunteer barbers shave it all off.. Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner

St. Thomas Episcopal Churchwomen, 298 Conklin St., Farmingdale are holding the annual corn beef and cabbage dinner at 5 p.m. The cost is $12 adults; $5 children under 12. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free Educational Services

Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. The LI Educational Opportunity Center offers programs leading to employment in a variety of fields as well as entrance to college. The LIEOC has satellite units in many areas. Exhibit

Celebrate Farmingdale State College’s 100th anniversary through a gallery exhibition titled “Historical Perspectives,” and visually experience its rich history as Long Island’s first public institution of higher learning. Photographs and artifacts will be displayed emphasizing FSC’s beginnings in 1912 as an agricultural college and our transition into a comprehensive college of applied sciences and technologies. •Beginners Hebrew course, sponsored by Hadassah, will be held at on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Murray Zwerling. For those who would like to learn or improve their basic Hebrew reading.

Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities

ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School

Offers classes for children from 18 months old through 5 years old where they can grow, play and learn together. The school offers a well-rounded program designed to stimulate the child creatively, socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face

That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Items needed include warm hats and scarves, thermal gloves and socks, thermal underwear, sweatshirts and sweatpants, toiletries and toys, new gifts, unwrapped with price tags removed. •Alcohol/Substance Dependency Support Group. Celebrate Recovery is a nationally acclaimed program that invites people of any faith or no faith at all to experience God’s healing power in the lives of all who suffer from alcohol or drug dependency. Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Divorce/Separation Support Group. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce. Become a part of a small support group of people who are experiencing the same. This is a non-denominational video seminar with nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery. Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Grief Recovery Support Group. GriefShare is a non-denominational, 13-week video seminar featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors with years of expertise in grief recovery. Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.

Free Writer’s Workshops

Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
