The Barclays, the first event of the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup, will occur on the world renowned Bethpage Black beginning Aug. 21.
“From the outset of the FedEx Cup, The Barclays has set the stage for the PGA Tour Playoffs with exciting and compelling competition in and around the New York City area,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. “As title sponsor, Barclays has helped to elevate the stature of the tournament and we are absolutely delighted that it will further its support. It is obvious that The Barclays will continue to represent a past, present and future of being staged on prestigious golf courses in the greater New York-New Jersey market.”
New York State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey said, “The Bethpage Black is an unforgettable place to both play and watch great golf. I’m grateful to Governor Cuomo and the PGA TOUR for the opportunity to host The Barclays golf tournament at Bethpage State Park, and to show again why our state parks system is such a great asset to New York State.”
The Black Course is one of five public courses at Bethpage State Park on Long Island. The Black Course is for walkers and should be played “only by low-handicap golfers.” Players line up in the wee hours of the morning and sleep in their cars for a chance to play the Black, which features narrow, tree-lined fairways, deep rough, ample well-placed and innovative bunkers and small greens. There are even designated “overnight” parking spaces for the hardy and anxious souls waiting for their chance to test their skill on a course many believe to be one of Tillinghast’s best.
