Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Savings Time began this past Sunday, March 11. Residents are reminded that clocks should have been set one hour ahead.
Local Law – Solicitations
The village’s solicitation law prohibits all unwanted commercial solicitations and distributions on all private residential property in the village and prohibits non-commercial solicitations and distributions on private property to the extent desired by the resident. This law was designed to protect residents from unwanted invasions of their privacy.
However, any resident who does not wish any solicitations should complete a “Notice of Objection” form at Village Hall. If you complete such form and are solicited, advise the solicitor that you have a non-solicitation request on file. If they persist, and I doubt they will, please call the Garden City Police Department at 465-4100.
As of this writing, the only group that has permission is the New York Youth Club. The New York Youth Club has been given permission to solicit on the following Saturdays, March 10, April 28, July 7, Sept. 29, Dec. 1, and Dec. 8, between the hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Although this organization, as does others, requested and was given permission to solicit by the board of trustees, the board of trustees takes no position and the decision to contribute or not is entirely up to the resident.
Spring Cleanup
All residents are asked to assist in the task of cleaning up our community to keep Garden City beautiful. This can be done by picking up paper, cans, bottles and other debris, which may have been deposited on the streets and other public areas near your homes. A few minutes of cooperative effort by all of us can make our village look 100 percent better.
Residents are also reminded that rubbish should not be placed on the curb before the evening prior to the collection day. It is a detraction from the aesthetics of the village and poor treatment of one’s neighbors to ignore the village law which specifies that rubbish should not be deposited at curbside before the evening prior to collection.
Pet owners are asked to please be considerate of those who are working to keep our community beautiful and those who are using park areas by cleaning up after your dog and by disposing of the waste at curbside on Wednesdays.
The police department is issuing summonses for these violations, which are answerable in the Village Justice Court and can result in a fine for each offense.
Village Election – Tuesday, March 20, 2012
The annual village election will be held on Tuesday, March 20, from noon until 9 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue. Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:
John J. Watras – Trustee – two-year term
Nicholas P. Episcopia – Trustee – two-year term
Andrew J. Cavanaugh – Trustee – two-year term
Brian C. Daughney – Trustee – two-year term
Since the incorporation of the village in 1919, members of the Board of Trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.
Absentee Ballot Applications
Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the General Village Election on March 20, are available at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave., Garden City. Applications must have been received by the village clerk by March 13 if the ballot is to be mailed. For personal application, the deadline is March 19.
Board of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees’ meeting will be held on Thursday, March 15, at 8 p.m.
