Canon To Continue Sponsorship Of International Music Nights Concerts
Canon U.S.A., Inc. has announced their continued sponsorship of the county’s International Music Nights Concert Series at Eisenhower Park’s Lakeside Theatre. Canon will provide $44,000 to support these events throughout the summer of 2012.
“Canon U.S.A. is very proud to extend our sponsorship of the International Music Nights Concert Series for 2012,” said Bunji Yano, senior director and general manager, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We look forward to another year of providing Nassau County residents with engaging cultural experiences that benefit our community.”
The 2012 series will feature more than 20 concerts at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, with starting times of 7:30 p.m.
Lakeside Theatre is located near parking fields 6 and 6A in Eisenhower Park. Special accommodations are available for disabled patrons, including reserved parking, easily accessible restrooms, and a convenient reserved location on the hill. Assistive hearing devices are also available for the hearing impaired. There is no formal seating at Lakeside Theatre; guests are urged to bring folding chairs. David Lerner Associates and the Greater Long Island Running Club will host the 21st Annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run at the Fieldhouse in Eisenhower Park to benefit the Police Crisis Fund, which supports families of the local law force in emergency situations. Benefit For Local Firefighter
Kevin O’Toole is a volunteer firefighter with the Bethpage Fire Department. Kevin was critically burned in the line of duty in Prince George’s County, MD, where he also volunteers with the Bladensburg Fire Department. O’Toole was one of several firefighters injured in a blaze at a vacant home in Riverdale, MD. The burns to his legs, ankles, thighs, fingertips, arms, shoulders and abdomen are second and third degree to more than 50 percent of his body. It’s been a grueling rehabilitation, which included 10 skin graft surgeries to his stomach, arms, legs, and hands. Kevin continues his rehabilitation and physical therapy at the Nassau University Medical Center Burn Unit. The family lives in Hicksville. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services
Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. The following programs are offered:
•The Community Program has a group for senior citizens. The Golden Years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. •A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. Therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems is provided. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers as well as parents whose children use drugs. •Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. Issues related to the family and the legal system will be addressed. •Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. HUMC Food Pantry Open
Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. Walls Of Honor
Need a gift for your favorite veteran? The NC Veterans Memorial Fund Inc., a nonprofit organization (not affiliated with Nassau County or any government agency) offers all veterans throughout the U.S. a place on the “Walls of Honor.” These walls are located at Veterans Plaza, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. It is for those living and deceased who served our county during war and peacetime. Space is available for those interested in including their name or that of a loved one. Proof of military service and a contribution of $100 per name is required. A 50-word or less military biography on each person on the wall will be housed in the veterans tower if requested.
