Vacation Bible School
Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, invited all children between the ages of 4 years old through fifth grade to get ready to dive into fun at Operation Overboard: Dare To Go Deep with God Vacation Bible School. Explore and experience God’s underwater universe at VBS. The fun begins July 23 and ends July 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. The adventures include regular Deep Sea Voyages into Bible fun and creative crafts, hands-on mission work, water science and great music. Program: Lecture: “Turning Pennies From Heaven Into a Steady Stream of Abundance.” Maria D’ Andrea is an internationally known author, Budapest-born psychic, clairvoyant and medium. Maria feels that for many, the last few years have been troubling times. The recession has seen a loss of jobs, dwindling retirement funds and an overall prevailing bad financial situation for the high percentage of Americans just struggling to get by. According to Maria, this situation is about to change. In her presentation Maria will present specific techniques that will release the innermost stumbling blocks that will attract all things desired in an individual’s life. She will lead a deep meditation that will release all negativity and pull in positive forces that will result in renewed abundance. She will show those attending how to use an ordinary object – a lemon – to take away the bitterness and make things sweeter all around. Participants will leave understanding how to materialize and experience goals and achieve success and mastery over all financial and personal matters. War Veteran Dedication Ceremony
The Nassau County Chapter of the Korean War Veterans of America will hold a dedication ceremony on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore (near the Bellmore railroad station) at the memorial stone for those veterans who died in the Korean War. The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. and the veterans will assemble at 10:30 a.m. All who are able to attend are welcome.

HUMC Food Pantry Open
Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The pantry is open on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Non-perishable foods, paper goods and hygiene items are given to our neighbors in need. Contact us if you can help in any way. The pantry relies on private donations. If you would like to help fill our shelves, we accept donations. Call 516-931-2626.
Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services
Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. The following programs are offered:
•The Community Program has a group for senior citizens. The Golden Years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. The Community Program is also a NYS DMV approved facility. For information about this or any other services call 822-4060.
•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. A nominal fee is charged. Therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems is provided. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers. While drug use among teens has declined in other parts of the country, it continues to rise here in Nassau County. For information on this group as well as other services, call 822-4060. •Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. Issues related to the family and the legal system will be addressed. Preregistration required. Call 822-4060.
•Young Adult Drug Addiction Group for those who are recovering from drug addiction. The goals are to enhance skills, increase self-awareness and work toward a drug and alcohol free life. Call 822-4060. All inquiries are confidential.
•Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The volunteers help raise much needed funds for the agency so that mental health and substance abuse programs can continue to be provided to the residents of Hicksville and the surrounding communities. If you have four hours per week and are looking to make friends while helping to raise needed revenue, Sharon Bohen or Kathleen Kovach at 822-6111, ext. 295.
•An Anger Management program led by a social worker from the agency’s Community Program is open to adults 17 and older. The course is geared to individuals who have unhealthy expressions of anger and need to learn how to manage anger; stop violence or the threat of violence; and develop self-control over thoughts and actions. Course attendees will receive positive support and feedback from others. Additionally, help will be provided to identify triggers, recognize cues to anger and develop individual anger management strategies. The fee for this course is $200. Central Nassau accepts Medicaid as well as several credit cards. Advanced registration is required and reservations can be made by calling 822-4060.
Exhibit
An ongoing exhibit of rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and fossils, butterflies and moths and historical artifacts and curiosities in Hicksville’s historic 1895 Heitz Place Courthouse. Now featuring the “Sights and Sounds” audioguide system in English and Spanish, the Naturalist’s Gift Shop and “Butterfly Days” every Thursday afternoon. Eyes Of Learning
A non-profit metaphysical study group held at Levittown Hall, Levittown Pky., Hicksville. Membership is $15 for individuals; $25 joint membership per year. Thrift Shop
The Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The Hicksville Gregory Museum seeks volunteers form every age and walk of life. The museum is especially interested in high school and college student volunteers.
