Naked Cowboy To Hand Out Thousands of Dollars for National Oyster Day

The guitar strumming Naked Cowboy of Times Square will be handing out thousands of dollars on Sunday, Aug. 5 to celebrate National Oyster Day.

Single dollar bills will be given to New York City pedestrians in hopes of getting them to nearby oyster bars and cafes in Times Square.

According to the Grub Street, some oyster bars to look out for in the city this weekend include Oceana, which is offering $1 oysters after 4 p.m. Primehouse, Atlantic Grill, Ocean Grill, and Blue Fin) are also offering
$1.50 oysters and $5 Muscadet with dinner.

The Blue Island Oyster Company of West Sayville hired the Naked Cowboy, Robert John Burck, two years ago as their spokesman.

“Oysters are the sexiest food on the planet and have always been associated with Nudity and Sensuality,” Burck said. “They served Casanova well.”

Naked Cowboy Oysters, which were originally titled Blue Island oysters, are harvested from the Long Island Sound and made available at many raw oyster bars in NYC.

Chris Quartuccio, owner of Blue Island Oyster Company, has been diving into the tides of Port Jefferson for years to gather the Naked Cowboy oysters.

Quartuccio recalled seeing the Naked Cowboy years ago, saying “I was driving down Seventh Avenue and sitting at a light and he was there and it just hit me. Oysters are sexy. Oysters are natural. Wild. Like a cowboy.”

You can also be wedded by the Reverend Naked Cowboy in Times Square since he was registered as a marriage officiant by New York in 2008.

Burck also tried throwing his hat into the political ring by challenging Mayor Bloomberg for his election in 2009 and declared his run for presidency as a candidate for the Tea Party in 2010.
