There was Olympic excitement at the WaterFront Center (WFC) of Oyster Bay as they cheered on U.S. Sailing Team members Erik Storck and Trevor Moore racing in the 49ers. WFC Executive Director Dave Waldo said in his newsletter, “Join us in throwing your full support behind Storck/Moore Sailing. The team has been preparing and training for this moment during the better part of three years. Time away from family, friends, and home has finally paid off as these two Olympians begin their quest in the 49er One Design Class for an Olympic Medal on July 30. Erik Storck, who has been a coach for the WFC’s High School Sailing program, was born and raised sailing on Long Island Sound in the very same boats our Junior Programs use, Opti’s and 420s. Homegrown talent and a supporter of the WFC’s mission, you can’t get any better than that. Don’t miss out on this high level sailing, the 49er is one of the most exciting one design boats to sail and watch on the planet.”
As we go to press on Monday, Aug. 6, Trevor Moore and Erik Storck will be trying for a place in the medal race on Wednesday.
Following the guys on the Internet we spotted an article by Bernie Wilson, of the Associated Press who quoted Trevor Moore on July 30 as saying, “The fans, you can hear them from hundreds of yards away. It’s a thrill, especially raising up the American flag for a kite,” said Trevor Moore, crewman for U.S. skipper Erik Storck. “It gives you that patriotism and the whole U.S. is standing behind you. It’s something special.”
That’s a great reason to cheer our athletes on. It’s a vicarious thrill for us too.
Watching the Olympians winning medals has been grand. It’s wonderful to see all these young people who have devoted so much time and energy into their love of sports. We wish them all well, and a special wish for Eric and Trevor, and to the WFC and their mission to get people out on the water.
