Five dollar admission brings the “game of kings” to everyone
Country Farms Polo presents Polo at the Park, a series of special polo events at Bethpage State Park each Sunday afternoon through Oct. 14. Polo, once referred to as the “game of kings,” is now gaining popularity among competitive sports fans and those seeking casual, local and low-cost entertainment. Country Farms Polo operates a polo training and equestrian center in Medford, NY with indoor and outdoor polo fields operating year round.
“With its high speeds and energy, polo is the original extreme sport. With Polo at the Park we wanted to introduce Long Islanders to polo in a way that is accessible to everyone. Long Island has a tradition of horsemanship and a thriving equestrian community; polo is a natural fit for those looking for a new experience that is thrilling and relaxing at the same time,” said Bob Ceparano of Country Farms Polo in Medford.
Summer Polo at the Park events include: August 26, September 2, 9, 16, 23 and October 7, 14.
Each polo match features eight riders on horseback that form two 4-player teams. The two teams of riders and ponies will show off their speed, endurance and panache as they fly around at speeds up to 40 mph. The match consists of seven chukkers (time periods) of 7.5 minutes each. Played on a manicured field of green grass, spectators can enjoy a relaxing picnic or spend the day surrounded by the beautifully landscaped grounds. The entrance to Bethpage State Park is located approximately 1 mile east of exit 8 on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway off of Plainview Rd. Gates open at 2 p.m. and the match begins at 3 p.m. Admission is $5; kids under 12 are free.
