3rd Annual Walk for Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases

The Lymphatic Research Foundation is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Walk for Lymphedema and Lymphatic Diseases. This event supports funding for The Lymphatic Research Foundation (LRF), which is an organization dedicated to advancing research of the lymphatic system and to find improved treatments and cures for lymphatic diseases, lymphedema, and related disorders. Participants will gather at 10 a.m. in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. Cafe Ablaze Reopening

Café Ablaze Christian Coffeehouse reopens the evening of Saturday, Sept. 22. Onstage will be the music ministry of soulful Long Island contralto singer, Patrizia DiLorenzo, as well as acclaimed Patchogue-based Rev 7 Band, led by Leah and Allen Cuffey. All are welcome. Sit at elegantly-decorated candlelit tables in a beautifully decorated “café” having a friendly, casual atmosphere. Enjoy flavored coffees and teas along with delectable desserts. The 2nd Annual Bully Breed Brigade

A day devoted to public awareness about the plight and potential of the Pit types lingering in shelters and foster care. Event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by Last Hope Animal Rescue & the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter located at Beltagh Ave., Wantagh (the street that adjoins the two shelters.) Most of the shelters, rescues, and demos will be set up in front of Hempstead Shelter, 3320 Beltagh Ave., with the overflow in the Last Hope parking lot at 3300 Beltagh Ave. Activities include an adoption fair, speakers, vendors, trainers, holistic rehabilitation experts, community outreach, Lug Nut weight pulling demo, Tellington Touch demo, and more. Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Start time is 8 a.m. Begins at Jones Beach and ends at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Teams must register online at www.glirc.org. Country-Western Party

A Country-Western party will be hosted by the Nassau & Queens Chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 3 p.m. The party will be held in the Parish Hall of the Church of St Jude, 3606 Lufberry Ave., Wantagh. Annual Walk For Epilepsy

The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island sponsored by B.FIT, will hold its Annual Walk for Epilepsy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eisenhower Park, Field 6/6A, East Meadow. The Emperor’s New Clothes

Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance presents the children’s musical The Emperor’s New Clothes at the Mainstage Theatre, 1 Education Dr., Garden City. The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” or becoming a sponsor. Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.

Dance Classes

Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Starting October 1:

•Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Starting October 2:

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

•Anxiety And Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd., Garden City. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. Ongoing Programs

Volunteers Sought for Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Anger Management

Individual: Combine individual therapy and anger management techniques. Bereavement Groups

•Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

•Group 2: The death of a love one is hard for all of us but especially for children. A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.

Cradle Of Aviation Museum

In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. Creativity Classes For Women

City Folk, Inc., 45 New Hyde Park Rd. (one block south of St. Anne’s Church), Garden City, offers Creativity Classes for women. It’s a great opportunity to have fun, while experiencing your creative side. Learn many different craft techniques in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Create a one of a kind craft project that is uniquely your own. No experience needed, just a desire to have fun. Each class includes a demonstration, lesson and supplies needed to complete the project. “Creativity Night” is also offered. Bring your group or club together for an exciting evening out. Elder Abuse

If you are 60 or older and are being hurt by someone who should be caring, you are not alone. If you are suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. The NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence offers counseling, legal advocacy and support services to seniors in need of help. All services are free and confidential. Call 542-0404. Epilepsy Foundation

Located at 506 Stewart Ave., Garden City (739-7733) the following is offered:

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Sons Of Italy

Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. A membership drive is currently in progress. The America Lodge #2245 is a co-ed lodge with many projects that enhance the preservation of the members’ Italian heritage.
