Trojans beat a scrappy Bulldogs squad on a pair of second half goals
The Garden City boys came out recently on their home turf fired up and looking to get on the winning side of the ledger against Roslyn. From the opening touch, the GC boys played with intensity; they were seemingly first to every loose ball, challenged all 50-50 chances or jumped higher for any headers in the air. With the game being played with a somewhat “ugly” style of soccer in the first half, the Trojans intensity carried the game. Once the GC boys settled down in the second half and began controlling the ball, the offense took over and produced two goals for the win.
Early in the first half, Garden City put the pressure on the Roslyn defense and finally broke through with a goal by Patrick Keogh off a deflected cross by Jack Gillan. The goal was a good example that hard work pays dividends, as Gillan fought through the Bulldogs defense to get the ball into the box. The second goal came with about 15 minutes left in the game and was scored by Gillan. This time it was about being in the right place and having a quicker step to the ball as he jumped between two defenders and placed his shot inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.
The defense played a strong match in coming up with their first shutout of the season. Keeper Tyler Biscone grabbed several loose balls in the box in the first half to control the play. In the second half he came up big with an exceptional sliding save on a ball at the foot of a Roslyn forward inside the six as GC was still only up only 1-0. Biscone finished with 9 saves.
Throughout the game, captains Marc Schwendemann and Stephen Soviero were forces around the ball, either pushing the ball up field or defending the counterattack. Also behind the ball, defending and keeping the score sheet clean, were Jake Menges, Kyle Ritchie, Johnny Morris and Ryan Zarou.
With much of the game being played in the midfield, the strong play of Jack Metzler, Keogh, Gillan, Greg Vouzianis and Matt Rogers was necessary to keep the ball moving quickly to the attack. GC was also very tough, taking the ball out of the air as they continually went up higher and stronger than Roslyn.
Coach Cutter was happy with the overall effort of the team and is hoping that the team continues to develop a more controlled game. Next up for the Trojans is a Friday game at Wantagh and then home on Wednesday against Jericho.
