Benefit Event For The Animal Cancer Foundation

Join Pet Sitters Club, Inc. along with Cara and James Preissler and The Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF) Board of Directors as they jointly host a fundraiser event featuring great food, raffle prizes and fun photo favors provided by the Main Event. The funds raised through this event will be utilized to support ACF’s mission of funding research in the study, prevention and treatment of cancers that occur in both people and pets. The event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Northport Yacht Club. Tickets are $90 ($44 of which is a tax deductible donation to The Animal Cancer Foundation). Annual Walk For Epilepsy

The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island sponsored by B.FIT, will hold its Annual Walk for Epilepsy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eisenhower Park, Field 6/6A, East Meadow. Registration fee is $25 before Oct. 13 and $30 on the day of the event (children under 12 are free). Register at www.efli.org. The Emperor’s New Clothes

Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance presents the children’s musical The Emperor’s New Clothes at the Mainstage Theatre, 1 Education Dr., Garden City. Knights of Columbus #11836 at St Anne’s Church is offering the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course. Hospice Care Network’s Crystal Ball Gala

Oktoberfest

First Annual Oktoberfest at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Starting at 3 p.m., activities for children and families including games, a dunk tank, German band, German food, and soft drinks. Then starting at 7 p.m., the focus moves to adults, continuing with The Luchow Quartet to provide authentic Oktoberfest music. Imported German beer may be purchased separately. Volunteers Sought for Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Creative Cups

The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” or becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations must be received by Oct. 15 to be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 14, 2013 at Adelphi University in Garden City). Those wishing to create a bra are encouraged to sign up early, as entrants will be limited to 200. Creative Cups celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those lost to this terrible disease. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Dance Classes

Learn the art of social and ballroom dancing with professional dance instructors. Singles and couples welcome. Beginners and advanced. At Kismet, 18 W. Nicholai St., Hicksville. Fridays from noon to 3:30 p.m. Lesson is $10. Social dancing takes place at 12:30 p.m. Chicken, salads, bagels, cream cheese, and pastries.
