John L. Schaefer, Jr. of Bayville died on Sep. 30, 2012, at age 28. Favorite son of John and Susan Schaefer. Beloved brother of Michele. Loving Fiancé of Meghan Mitchell. Cherished grandson of Claire and Jim Jarman. He was born in Queens, on Feb. 20, 1984.
He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.
John L. Schaefer, Jr. was a devoted and proud Marine who served his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was a member of both American Legion Robert H. Spittell Post 1285 and Oyster Bay V.F.W. Post 8033.
Visiting was at the Oyster Bay Funeral Home, on Oct. 2 and 3. The wake was attended by the Marine Corps league. The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR), a motorcycle group with the Marines came. PGR Assistant State Captain Jim McElroy said, “We had been asked by the Leathernecks on behalf of his father, who is also a Marine, and the family, to stand for this brave man who saw things and had to deal with things that most of us can never begin to understand,” he said. LCPL John L. Schaefer, Jr. served honorably in Fallujah, Iraq in the war on terror and served his country proudly, he added.
Three local fire companies, Locust Valley, Oyster Bay and Bayville attended and raised two flags in his honor. There was a long line of mourners waiting to visit.
