It took several years before Hicksville’s John Mauro won his first Legionnaire of the Year Award but not nearly as long to win his second.
The American Legion Post 421 member was once again given the honor from The American Legion’s Nassau County Committee for the second straight year. Mauro graciously accepted the award from American Legion Charles Wagner Post 421 Commander Tony Paternostro, Tenth District Commander Harry D. Ransom and Program Chairman Reginald Butt, Jr.
Mauro is a longtime resident and World War II veteran who organizes the myriad functions and events for Post 421.
Previously, Mauro served as the Grand Marshal for the Hicksville Memorial Day Parade in 2011.
Hicksville Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander William Walden hailed Mauro and his wife, Terry, as “some of the nicest people you will ever meet.” Walden called Mauro a “stand-up guy” who maintains relationships between the various veterans’ organizations in the area and is a “tremendous asset” to the Hicksville community.
“We congratulate John, his lovely wife, Terry, and all of the Mauro family … and we thank him for his service to our country and the Hicksville community,” Walden said.
The American Legion Post 421 meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Hicksville VFW Hall, 320 South Broadway, in Hicksville. All eligible veterans are welcome. For more information, call 942-5563 or email AL421@ymail.com.
