Free Lecture at Hofstra
The Long Island Society of the Archaeological Institute of America will be presenting a free lecture titled “The Unsolved Mystery of the Athenian Agora Bone Well” at 2 p.m. The lecture will take place in Breslin Hall, Room 106 at Hofstra University. Speaker will be Dr. Susan Rotroff, (AIA speaker), who is a professor in the Dept. of Classics at Washington University, St. Louis. Free Bereavement Workshop
Catholic Health Services of Long Island’s Good Shepherd Hospice will be offering a free “Coping With the Holidays” bereavement workshop at Mercy Medical Center at 7 p.m. The 90-minute session, to be conducted in the hospital’s first floor Board Room, will offer encouragement, education, and support to help those who have lost a loved-one to navigate their grief during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays. Café Ablaze 4th Anniversary Gala
Café Ablaze Christian Coffeehouse is having a gala to celebrate its fourth anniversary. Onstage will be veteran band of contemporary Christian recording artists, Eyewitness. Preceding them will be solo soprano Christian folk and rock singer, Tiffany Smitelli. Music videos of the talent may be viewed at www.resgc.org/ cafe-ablaze. Doors open at 7 p.m. and all are welcome. Seating is at candlelit tables in a beautifully decorated friendly, casual atmosphere. The self-service choices include specialty coffees and teas, desserts, fruit salad, cheese and crackers, and bottled water. Tickets, sold at the door, are $10, or two for $15. Children 12 and under are admitted free with an adult. A separate free will offering is collected for the talent. •Anxiety And Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd., Garden City. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. •Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.
•Group 2: The death of a love one is hard for all of us but especially for children. A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.
Cradle Of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. Creativity Classes For Women
City Folk, Inc., 45 New Hyde Park Rd. (one block south of St. Anne’s Church), Garden City, offers Creativity Classes for women. It’s a great opportunity to have fun, while experiencing your creative side. Learn many different craft techniques in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Create a one of a kind craft project that is uniquely your own. No experience needed, just a desire to have fun. Each class includes a demonstration, lesson and supplies needed to complete the project. “Creativity Night” is also offered. Bring your group or club together for an exciting evening out. Elder Abuse
If you are 60 or older and are being hurt by someone who should be caring, you are not alone. If you are suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. The NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence offers counseling, legal advocacy and support services to seniors in need of help. All services are free and confidential. Call 542-0404. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Sons Of Italy
Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. A membership drive is currently in progress. The America Lodge #2245 is a co-ed lodge with many projects that enhance the preservation of the members’ Italian heritage. Volunteers Sought for Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Furniture Needed
The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
