The high school winter sports season is well underway, and we are now at the Christmas mid-season break. The Oyster Bay girls team is at six wins and one loss. The first meet was the loss to last year’s county champions, Manhasset, 12 to 15. Significant wins followed against Wheatley, Valley Stream, Garden City, Great Neck North, Jericho and Hewlett. Foil team captain JoAnn Alerte leads the team with a 20-1 record. Other top foilists include Silvana Fazzalari, Liz Gurdus and Virginia Kemp. Saber captain junior Laura Broffman is 17-4 with Kristalle Sharma and Christy Ha. Epeeists include Nina Policano, who is 17-2, with captain Lil Manning and Grey Warwick Clark. The girls are looking forward to revenging their loss to Manhasset when they play them away on Jan. 10.
Oyster Bay boys team is undefeated at 6 and 0, defeating Manhasset, Wheatley, Garden City, Great Neck North, Jericho and Hewlett. Foil captain Nick LaRosa leads the team with a record of 17 and 0 with Berkeley Golon and Oliver Gonzalez. Epees are led by Jason Halpern at 11 and 3 with brothers Michael and Andreas Tsoumpariotis. And saber captain Matt Mahoski is at 14 and 4 with Anant Mehrotra and Chris Roerden.
Fencing in Nassau County has only one league, and Oyster Bay is the smallest school with one of the biggest squads. The boys team lost five All-County fencers due to graduation last year, but had a strong underclass squad, who have stepped up to fill their shoes. The boys have a great start on their way to retaining their Nassau County Championship titles of the last two years.
Home meets are held in the gym at the Vernon Middle School, East Norwich, starting at 5 p.m. Upcoming home meets are Wed. Jan 16 vs. Wheatley and Tues. Jan. 29 vs. Great Neck North.
